Love is Darkness by Caroline Hanson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Losing her mother to a vampire, Valerie Dearborn should have been brought up by her father with the tender love only one who has experienced loss could give. The reality is vastly different, her father's dedication to destroying vampires fueled him, his apprentice Jack who she has been in love with since the first time she met him, was far closer than she ever was to her father. Wanting her to follow in the family footsteps, Val resists at every turn finally breaking free and heading to graduate school in London.
Unrealizing Val has been under the watchful eye of Lucas, a 1600 year old Vampire whose power is unparalleled. Lucas knows that Val is a rare Empath who can quickly become a hazardous addiction to a vampire. Lucas enlists the help of Val to leak information about vampires who need to be destroyed, in turn he will protect those she loves. Neither though expects the attraction to one another to be as ignited as it is, and what about Jack who rebuffed her confession of how she felt and quickly swept it under the rug.
I gave this a 3.99 almost a 4 but I was having a hard time wrapping myself around her relationship with Jack who was frankly quite cold. There is an emptiness to Valerie an there was a character thrown in that made no sense to his needing to be in it. Liked Lucas, of course I am always a sucker for a bad boy. Will probably read the next one.
