Corny Myers Series by Sharon Kleve Spotlight

Corny has her work cut out for her in "The Ex", Book Four in The Corny Myers Series.

The Ex Blurb:
Corny has her work cut out for her in "The Ex", Book Four in The Corny Myers Series.

Corny's excitement over serving on jury duty is squashed when she hears news of Steve's ex girlfriend relocating to Seattle.
Steve's an aggressive, tough, Seattle narcotics cop who thinks Celeste could do no wrong.
Celeste is back in town and has set her sights on rekindling her relationship with Steve. Being an FBI agent she's used to getting what she wants, no matter what the cost.
Corny is trying to keep her relationship from falling apart, while rescuing pets, and saving her friend from a loan shark.
Can Pete, Corny's ferret, learn how to use the phone in time to save the day?

Excerpt:
Have you told Steve about the jury summons? You need to tell him how to take care of me in case you get sequestered. Pete grabbed his tail with his tiny paws and chewed on the tip, a sure sign he was agitated.
"How do you know I didn’t tell him already?" I knew what his answer would be, because his answer was always the same.
I have excellent hearing, Pete chattered.
"No. You're a little spying devil."
That's the only way I know what's going on around here. He pouted.
"I promise to tell Steve. You have nothing to worry about. I'll have to go through the jury selection process. If I did get selected for a case the chances of me being sequestered are slim. You'll be fine."
You better be right. He scurried down the hall.
Besides being an aggressive, tough, Seattle narcotics cop, Steve was my boyfriend. He looked sexy as hell in his faded jeans, Mariners T-shirt, sneakers and 9mm gun hooked to his belt. He'd grabbed a leather jacket out of the bedroom closet and flung the heavy material over his shoulder.
"Hey Steve, can you check on Pete real quick? I might've hurt the little guy's feelings."
"Sure. What am I looking for? Will he be blowing his nose or wiping his eyes with a tissue?" Steve asked.

Reviews:

Flamingo Blues (book 1)
Corny Myers has an ability to that lets her talk to animals.  With her boyfriend Steve in tow, they had for a romantic excursion to Victoria BC .  Their adventure is not without incident when a major  event happens in Corny and Steve’s relationship, as well as a couple of homesick flamingos wanting to be home for Christmas ask Corny’s help.

Be Mine (book 2)
Corny is back and planning a week of surprises for her live in boyfriend Steve.  As the quirky character shares her plans with Steve’s drug sniffing dog who is in the dog house, he gives some comedy relief when Corny’s plans don’t always go as planned.

Klutzy Love (book 3)
Animal confident Corny Myers meet  narcotics cop Steve Spears.  This hilarious story of how Corny and Steve get together is as unusual as it is entertaining.    Learn how Steve, who is used to watching people, finds out that Corny talks to animals.

The Ex (book 4)
Everything is going wonderfully in Corny’s life.  She loves her boyfriend, her ferret Pete is turning into a bit of a perv but overall life couldn’t be better.  Of course Corny has a way of finding herself embroiled in unusual situations and  one of the latest turns out to be Steve’s ex who seems to have forgotten they broke up,.

A hilarious set of quick stories about Corny.  Corny reminds me of a bit of a goof ball, but in the best way.  She kinds of goes with the flow and has no idea how things are going to turn out but is always willing to try.  Hope to read more in this delightful series.

Bio:
Sharon Kleve was born and raised in Washington and currently lives on the Olympic Peninsula with her husband. She loves romance. She loves reading romance, living romance, and especially loves writing about romance. She gets no greater feeling than watching her characters come alive in each other's arms. Most of all, she loves giving her characters the happily ever after they deserve—with a few bumps and bruises along the way.

One of her favorite things to do is picking up a new book and sinking into the story, immersing herself in the emotions between the characters. She hopes to inspire her readers the same way her favorite authors have inspired her.

When not writing, she can usually be found either curled up in her recliner with her cat and a good book, or in the kitchen baking sourdough bread or bagels.

Dangerous Race by Dee J. Adams

Dangerous Race (Adrenaline Highs, #1)Dangerous Race by Dee J. Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Race Car Driver Trace Bradshaw was at the top of her game when a horrible crash halted her future. Despite the odds, Trace was never one to give up, four years later she is ready to reenter the racing world and prove she is a serious contender in racing.

As a favor Mac Reynolds has agreed to be the team leader to Trace's team. The friction is instant, Trace likes having things done her way but Mac is no slacker and his only goal is to get Trace to the finish line. When it becomes apparent someone is trying to sabotage Trace, Mac is by her side but he has his own demons that need to be confronted in order to have any type of future with Trace.

Several surprises in this one. I actually have read the third and fourth in the series and not sure if that wavered my thoughts on this book because you do know a bit about the main characters. I thought this was good and can see where the series gets better with each new addition. Trace is not the softest of characters but I think that is because she is driven for a young woman and has not really experienced the normal adolescence you would normally have.

Dark Innocence by Rahima Warren Guest Post, Spotlight and Review

Dark Innocence “can take its place amongst Tolkien and the best of science fiction writers such as Ursula LeGuin.  It is a well-sustained, exciting and suspenseful narrative written in a lucid and powerful style.”
Harris Smart, author of seven books, editor,  film and television producer, formerly a Fellow in the Creative Writing Dept. at Stanford University

ABOUT Dark Innocence:
Long ago, an ancient, peaceful land was blessed and guided by the Goddess Zhovanya. Then, an all-powerful sorcerer called the Soul-Drinker conquered the land, banished the Goddess, and turned Her sacred Temple into a dark maze of suffering and evil. Keeping himself alive for six generations through orgies of human sacrifice, the Soul-Drinker has cowed the people, and is draining the very essence of life and spirit from the land.
The Circle, a dedicated group working covertly to end his horrific reign, is led by Rajani, a Warrior-Mage oath-bound to ensure that the Star-Seer’s Prophecy is fulfilled. The Prophecy foretells that the only one who can destroy the Soul-Drinker, bring back the Goddess, and restore the sacred balance of the earthly and divine realms is the “twin-souled dark innocent.”
But that dark innocent is an unlikely savior: Kyr, a youth born and raised as a slave of the Soul-Drinker, who blindly carries out the sorcerer’s brutal commands. How can an abject slave overcome the Soul-Drinker’s unbreachable sorcerous defenses? Even more impossible, how can he overcome his vicious upbringing, and become a man of courage and compassion who is willing to fulfill the demands of the Prophecy?
In Book One: Dark Innocence, Kyr begins an astonishing and arduous journey beyond the darkness that is all he has ever known.

Guest Post on being Swept Away by My Protagonist!

Why did I write this book, you ask? It wasn’t my idea. The main character had quite a journey to go on. The only way he could do it was to take over my life and turn me into a writer!

For many years, I had fantasies of what I call the “suffering hero” – not the usual intrepid dragon-slaying hero of many fantasies, but a hero enduring terrible torment, and through great courage and nobility of spirit, surviving and eventually finding his way to love. Then one day in December 1999, I wrote a little story in my journal.  My idea was to write down this inner character’s story so he’d stop bugging me. Big mistake!

That little story opened the floodgates to a passionate creative outpouring and I spent the next three years sneaking off to write whenever I could, staying up late, ignoring the laundry, etc. I surrendered to the current and it swept me along. What spilled forth onto my laptop was a dark, deep, sensual yet spiritual and healing fantasy trilogy, entitled THE STAR-SEER’S PROPHECY.

I had no plan. I just went with the flow and wrote what the protagonist—his name is Kyr, by the way—showed me. His story started out so dark that I was sure I would never show it to anyone, ever! But it was so much fun to write, I had to keep on going. Besides, it was the only way I could find out what happened next.

You know how they say to “write what you know?” When I reached the conclusion of Kyr’s story, I realized that, without planning to, I had woven into the story what I know, and that, with proper editing, it was a story worth sharing. Before Kyr took over my life, I was a psychotherapist. I’ve also been on my own inner journey of healing, and of developing my spiritual nature for over 40 years. In one way of looking at it, Kyr came to me so he could go on his healing journey, and that is the main focus of this story.

BOOK ONE: DARK INNOCENCE, begins the story of the slave Kyr’s arduous journey of healing and transformation from the evil and pain of the Soul-Drinker’s hell to redemption and love. It is a gripping, intense and yet inspiring story of mystery and intrigue, courage and endurance, secrets and forbidden love, set in an ancient world of blood sorcery and ritual magic.

Manipulated by enemy and friend alike, Kyr struggles to recover his true essence from the darkest of ordeals, to retrieve the light of his soul from the depths of remorse, and to discover the truth of Love, as he is propelled toward his destiny by the predictions of the Star-Seer’s Prophecy. Ultimately, he finds some inner peace, and falls in love with Jolanya, a Priestess-Healer called the Kailithana. Her sacred work is to heal the wounds of severe emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Once their sacred healing work is complete, Kyr is devastated to discover that she is forbidden to him by her vows as the Kailithana. Their story continues in Books Two and Three. Those two books will be out in 2014 and 2015.

So, why did I write this book? I wasn’t intentionally trying to write a book that would be helpful to others. (If I had been, I would have written a self-help book, not a fantasy story!) I was just having fun and following where my muse led me. However, with my background as a psychotherapist, I couldn’t help but write a book that is about inner healing and transformation, and it has turned out to be, according to one reader, “a fantastic and compelling fantasy story that I could both enjoy, and use as guidance through suffering.” May my creative adventure benefit you too!

ABOUT Dark Innocence: Book One of the Star-Seer's Prophecy by Rahima Warren
The “twin-souled dark innocent,” Kyr, is a youth born and raised to blindly carry out the Soul-Drinker’s brutal commands. At first, Kyr’s one desire is death, the only escape from the Soul-Drinker’s hellish rule. Just when he is about to get his wish, the secret Circle rescues him. Now he has to choose between the familiar easy path of despair and death, or the hard path of healing, living, and a greater destiny, about which he knows nothing. How can a slave who has known only evil, pain and obedience choose to become a man of courage and compassion, and fulfill the Star Seer's Prophecy?

Rahima Warren’s Bio:
Rahima Warren is the author of Dark Innocence: Book One of the Star-Seer's Prophecy, a deep, rich novel of the healing journey. With Master's degrees in Clinical and Transpersonal Psychology, she was in private practice as a licensed psychotherapist for over 20 years. In 2006, Rahima retired to focus on her expressive painting, creative writing, and spiritual studies.
In her work with clients recovering from abuse, she was awed by the human capacity to heal, and to reach new levels of forgiveness, wholeness and happiness. She also learned to trust the psyche's own process. This enabled her to allow a dark and mysterious story to flood forth unhindered: Dark Innocence: Book One of the Star-Seer's Prophecy
Rahima is a third-generation native of California and resides with her husband in Northern California, where she periodically chases squirrels off the wild bird feeders, and deer away from her roses. Her life-long love of fantasy is her parents' fault: they left sci-fi & fantasy magazines with fascinating cover art lying around the house.

As You wish by Elyssa Patrick

As You Wish (Rock Stars in Love #1)As You Wish by Elyssa Patrick
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rock Star Aubry Riley arrives in Vermont wanting to start a new leaf with his six year old daughter. His reputation as a bad boy is not far from the truth, he has earned whole heartily everything said about him. When he stops to help a stranded car on the snow covered road, he doesn't quite know how to read the flighty blonde woman and her quirky behavior.

Portia Jackson's life is not going as plan, she is about to lose her shop that her family worked hard to build and now her knight in shining armor is none other than rock star Aubry Riley who she has a major crush on. Should she admit that she is a die hard fan or deny, of course then she reveals her fear of wolves which stems from an unlikely source.

I am mixed on this one, I thought there was definite chemistry between Aubry and Portia but there is a ton of back story that never really gets revealed about Aubry. I would have loved to know where his hardened attitude comes from, but you don't really find out. Portia I could totally relate to loved that she lived in la la land and the references to movies. Had quite a bit of humor to the story though.
