The Armstrong’s and Montgomery’s have long been at war with one another, when the king sees no resolution to a truce he forces a marriage between the clans hoping it will bring an end to the feud before more death is shed. Rumors swirl about Eveline Armstrong mostly that she is “touched” or “daft”, but no one has gotten close enough to her in years to really see if the rumors are true. Graeme Montgomery is insulted that he is forced to marry a woman who can bear no heirs , nor for all marital purposes share his bed. He knows to go against the king will mean swift death for his clan, but it can’t help him dread is impending fate.
Eveline has kept a secret for three years, while she lets the rumors drift, they are far from the truth. Seeing Graeme as a chance for safety and perhaps an opportunity to be herself, Eveline accepts the marriage only to learn he has plans for it in name only. Of course Graeme has never met a woman like Eveline who is intent on making him proud as the lairds wife, even if she can’t hear.
