Insatiable Tours: Sacrifice by M.G. Morgan

Sacrifice

M.G. Morgan

The moment Sam looked at me, I knew he saw me. The real me, not the one I pretended to be. He saw beyond my pretense to the girl beneath. The girl who cried herself to sleep at night. The girl who pushed people away, when all she really wanted was for someone to look her in the eye and tell her everything would be alright. That life wasn’t always pain. That living wasn’t always this difficult. That the ones you loved didn’t always leave you behind. In that moment, Sam saw me, and I saw him. And I knew without a doubt that I would love him and he would betray me.

Natasha Masterton, a young college student on the verge of graduation, has the world at her feet. But all is not at it seems. Her mother is dead and she hasn’t seen her father in over three years. The only dealing she has with him is when he deposits her allowance into a bank account every month. Her father’s lack of interest has hardened Natasha to the rest of the world, leaving her cold and more than a little broken.
When Sam Harker crashes into Natasha’s life, asking questions about her father and dragging up the past, Natasha’s interest in piqued. The more time she spends with him, the more she falls for his easy charm and quick smile.

But Sam has secrets of his own - secrets that threaten their blossoming relationship. And when the real reason for Natasha’s fathers disinterest becomes apparent, a sacrifice must be made. Love, honor and duty collide… risking more than just a broken heart.
Sometimes love is worth the ultimate price.

Creation of Character

When I first think of a character, they don’t appear in my mind fully formed. When I first think of them, I think of them as voices… I know, that sounds crazy, but I swear I’m not.

Half the time I’m not entirely sure where they came from, or even why they chose when they did to finally reveal themselves to me. In Sacrifice, Natasha is a woman who is so very lonely. She has friends, (not many) she goes out socialising and very often she is surrounded by people but it doesn’t stop her from being lonely. When she first came to me and I heard her “voice” for the first time it hit me straight away just how alone she was. It was like this great big aching hole had opened up inside her. She wanted her father to love her, to really see her. But of course after the death of her mother he didn’t. He does everything in his power to push her away. And of course Natasha believes this is her fault.

Building on that was easy. I know what loneliness is like. Growing up and going to school I was one of those really shy kids. I spent most of my time with my nose buried in a book and I preferred to be friends with the characters within those books. As I got older, went to college, I found myself spending a lot of time alone. Like Natasha, I had friends, but I don’t think they ever understood me. And I recognised that same quality in my character Natasha.

She like me, longed to find someone to connect with. Someone we could share our innermost thoughts with. Someone who really saw us. Saw who we were and would love us despite our flaws.

Natasha has that in Sam. They are made for each other. And even though Sam has his own tragic circumstances to overcome, it doesn’t stop him from recognising a kindred spirit in Natasha. I guess, even though each of my characters are new and different they all carry some piece of me. A spark if you will, something that drives them, makes them yearn. And I suppose in a way it is something that is in all of us. One thing I loved, still do, when I read about my favourite characters is finding something within them that resonates with me. And I suppose in a way it’s what we all search for when we read and it’s what I strive to give my characters, so they can share it with you.

Are there any characters that really resonated with you? One that you found yourself reading about, and then couldn’t shake them?

  1. This was a great book. Sweet, caring with lots of different plots & twist. Just when you think you've figured it out you don't. The interview of different of how Mom Morgan finds her characters was neat. You think seeing your character, not hearing & that's a cool way to start. Highly recommend book & appreciate the time on all your parts.
