Off the Clock
by Kenzie

BLURB:
Austin
Harmon is intrigued by his quiet, efficient new administrative assistant. Why
does she have an obsession with her watch, and what does she do after hours?
Cara
has put her social life on hold while caring for her elderly mother. But after
her boss helps her through a crisis, she can't deny their attraction. Romance
and Alzheimer's don't mix... or do they?

Excerpt:
Austin drummed his fingers on his desktop, and, as the door
to his office opened, picked up a sheaf of papers and waved them at her. “Care
to explain this?”
Cara’s complexion paled, but she continued to look him in
the eye. “The snack bar is in need of an overhaul. The counter is rotting, the
windows are cracked, and there’s no air conditioning out there. One of the
microwaves needs replaced, and shelves need to be built in the storeroom.” She
crossed the room as she spoke and settled herself in the oak chair in front of
the desk. “Those are the estimates from bidders. I told them you’d make a
decision by the end of the week. Repairs are set to begin at the end of the
month.”
Austin struggled to contain his rising temper. “And how did
you come by this information?” he demanded. “I hired you to straighten out my
office, not to start running the place.”

Review:
Austin Hammon made the mistake with mixing business with pleasure with his former administrative assistant, but he does not plan to make the same mistake with Cara. Cara is a breath of fresh air at work, but she is stickler for her time after work. Even though he has vowed not to get involved with Cara, the more time he spends with her the more he wants to get to know her, especially why she runs off every night and to who?
Short but sweet story. I thought that the story was packed full of details and a an ideal read for when you are needing a much needed break. Wonderful quickie.

Sounds like a great story... just wish is wasn't so short. I see Amazon lists it at only 42 pages long... is that true?
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting me today!
ReplyDelete@Joanna: Yes, all three books in this series are around the 40 page mark. This was intended to be for an anthology, so had to keep it short. Hope you enjoy it!
Looking forward to reading it.

@Mary: Oooh, good...I'm glad I've intrigued you!
Due to rain last night, my internet was iffy. I'll announce the winner hopefully later today.
Does the title have any special meaining?
ReplyDeleteandralynn7 AT gmail DOT com
@Andra: No; this was supposed to be part of an anthology called 'Off The Clock', where we were all going to write stories centered around a specific workplace, and each taking a different character. My brain kicked into gear a week later and began writing this story, only to discover the workplace was supposed to be a fast-food 'Chicken Shack'. The antho never got off the ground, so I exercised my right to keep the title:)
ReplyDeleteMelissa! You're the lucky winner today:)
