Is the sexy Seattle quarterback for real, or is there something wrong with Mr. Perfect?

 Excerpt

Chapter One

Seattle, Washington, July, 2013

“Have you noticed nobody holds hands anymore?” Chef Ivy Turin picked up a tomato from the pile of neatly displayed produce at Pike Street Market. “It was my favorite part of dating in high school. There was no PDA allowed in the halls, but my boyfriend would sneak up next to me and slip his fingers through mine. That simple little gesture made me feel special.”
Beth, her sous chef, eyed her with sarcastic amusement. “You are special.”
Ivy selected several more tomatoes and put them in the cloth grocery bag. Handing the items to the cashier, she fished money from her pocket. “Me? You’re as jaded as the necklaces in the next stall.”
“I’m jaded? You’re the one who hasn’t had a date since you dumped Kevin,” Beth said, examining an odd-looking fiddlehead fern. “Although I suppose I can’t blame you for being cautious after what he did to you. Stealing from the restaurant to cover his gambling debt was beyond wrong, but there are good guys out there.”
“I’m well aware of that,” Ivy said, accepting the change from the cashier. Although nine months had passed since the breakup, Kevin’s betrayal still stung. It wasn’t as much about the money he embezzled. It was the deceit it was predicated upon.
“I realize it’s cliché but you need to forget about him and move on. Maybe you could start with your perfect high school boyfriend,” Beth said, moving to the next stall. “He might be available.”
“Are you searching for the perfect man?” the jade vendor behind the counter asked. He had an Australian accent and pale grey eyes disconcerting in their intensity.
Beth pointed at Ivy. “Her, not me. She’s—well, she used to be—a hopeless romantic.”
The vendor gave Ivy a speculative look before lifting up a simple silver chain with a green jade amulet hanging from it. “If you truly want to find this elusive perfect man, and restore your faith in true love, this necklace will be your good luck talisman.”
He tried to hand it to Ivy. She refused. “It’s beautiful—”
Leaning forward, he clasped her wrist and pressed the necklace into her palm. “It’s a gift.”
Ivy expected the jade to be cool to the touch, It heated her skin, sending an unexpected jolt of energy throughout her body. Pulling away, she dismissed the unusual sensation as a consequence of the double espresso she’d recently finished. All of this talk of magic was giving her the creeps.
“I couldn’t. It’s too much.” She tried to pass it back. He merely grinned.
“The first step to finding true love is acceptance,” he said, winking at Beth. “Take the necklace. Wear it with hope in your heart, and when you find the perfect man, everything will become clear.”

Returning home to surprise his wife, Eddie didn't expect to find her leaving. Now in a bit of a funk, Eddie needs to find some normalcy going back to work. Instead he is partnered with a woman who asks to many questions, but once he gets to know her he finds that letting go might be the best thing ever.

Very short story, was enjoyable but wished it had been a bit longer to fully develop the characters. I felt for Eddie and Rie is a perfect compliment to him.

Waking up Dead by Margo Bond Collins Book Tour, Interview and Review

Blurb

When Dallas resident Callie Taylor died young, she expected to go to Heaven, or maybe Hell. Instead, when she met her fate early thanks to a creep with a knife and a mommy complex, she went to Alabama. Now she's witnessed another murder, and she's not about to let this one go. She's determined to help solve it before an innocent man goes to prison. And to answer the biggest question of all: why the hell did she wake up dead in Alabama?

Excerpt:

As Molly straightened up, the man slipped the wire over her head and twisted it around her neck. She struggled, but he pulled the garrote tighter and tighter.
I was screaming at the top of my ghostly voice, for all the good it did me. I moved up behind the man and beat at his back with closed fists--fists that slipped in and out of his back without ever making real contact. He shuddered a little--clearly he was one of the very slightly sensitive ones--but he didn’t loosen his hands.
I reached up and tried to grab the wire, tried to pull against the pressure he was exerting on the wire and it did loosen for an instant. But only for an instant. The living have more control over solid objects than the dead do. I never resented that fact more than at that moment.
But I kept trying. I kept trying as Molly’s face turned purple, then blue, then black, kept trying even as she drooped in the man’s grip.
Then he loosened the wire and it was too late. I watched that wispy, light-on-fog life force slip out of Molly and move on to wherever it is that other people go when they die. I was glad she didn’t show up next to me as a full-blown ghost. At that moment, I wouldn’t have wished my impotent half-existence on anyone.
I couldn’t help thinking that if I’d been alive, I might have been able to save her.
If I could have cried real tears, I would have. As it was, I was sobbing hoarsely and calling the man every dirty name I could think of.
I was still cursing as I followed him around the kitchen. First he opened the pantry and pulled out a box of Hefty garbage bags. Then he grabbed a knife out of the block on the counter. And finally, he picked up Molly’s body and carried it to the bathroom.

Interview
Please tell us about yourself.
In my other life, I’m a college professor; I teach English courses online. I live in Texas with my husband and our daughter and a number of thoroughly silly animals. Waking Up Dead is my first published novel. My second novel, Legally Undead, is an urban fantasy forthcoming in 2014 from World Weaver Press. I got the offers to publish the two novels in the same month. That was officially the best month of my life!

Tell us about your book.
In Waking Up Dead, when Dallas resident Callie Taylor died young, she expected to go to Heaven, or maybe Hell. Instead, she met her fate early thanks to a creep with a knife and a mommy complex. Now she's witnessed another murder, and she's not about to let this one go. She's determined to help solve it before an innocent man goes to prison. And to answer the biggest question of all: why the hell did she wake up in Alabama?

What inspired you to write Waking up Dead?
I wrote Waking Up Dead when I lived in Alabama for a few years. I remember driving to work one morning and seeing just a wisp of fog move across the statue in the middle of the town square. The statue was of some Civil War figure, and thought that it looked oddly ghostly. In between teaching classes that day, I started writing Callie’s story.

How many hours per week do you spend writing?
These days I do my very best to spend at least an hour a day writing fiction. But I do a lot of non-fiction writing, too, so I spend much more time than that writing overall!

If you could meet three authors, which authors would you choose?
I’m worried I would go all star-struck and not be able to say anything coherent! But assuming I could keep my wits about me, I would like to meet (in no particular order): Neil Gaiman, because he’s so bloody brilliant; Charles Stross, whose sense of the absurd always delights me; and Anne Aguirre, because she’s so beautifully outspoken about what it means to be a woman who writes science fiction.

What are you working on at the moment?
Piles of projects! I’m currently doing a round of edits to Legally Undead, the first of the Vampirarchy urban fantasy series coming out from World Weaver Press in 2014. I’m working on the sequels to Waking Up Dead and Legally Undead. I’m working on a contemporary romance novel. I’m editing a number of academic projects, too—mostly collections of essays about science fiction and fantasy televisions series like Farscape, The Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural.

When did you know you wanted to become an author?
I’ve always known, for as long as I can remember. The first story I remember actually writing down was basically fan-fiction of The Wizard of Oz. I wrote it in long-hand in a yellow legal pad. I’ve been writing ever since.

How long did it take you to write Waking up Dead from start to finish?
Six weeks. I tend to write very quickly and steadily anyway, and Waking Up Dead flowed fairly easily.

What is your editing process like?
I edit on the sentence level as I go, changing things around as necessary. But I also tend to write in scenes, and if a scene isn’t working, I will simply put a reminder in brackets—something like this: [FIX THIS SCENE].  Then I move on. So the first editing step is always to do a search for those brackets and do my best to address the issues. Once I’ve done that, I do a read-through for plot coherence. Then I do a final read-through for any other issues.  And then I quit for a while so I can get some distance before I come back to it for a final proofreading session.

What was the most challenging part about writing Waking up Dead?
Making sure the mystery made sense! About halfway through I figured out that I was going to need to solve the mystery before the characters did! So at that point I decided where I was headed, generally—but the characters took me where I needed to go.

What are your writing goals for 2014?
Always keep writing! I have three works in progress that I plan to complete. And I also have two others that I want to get to. So I guess that means my goal is to finish five novels. (I’m suddenly realizing that I might be insane . . . )

Review
Werewolf Dominic Ridolfi has been sent to kill Kate, a woman who unbeknownst to her, is from a long line of vampires.  It should have been straight forward, but Dominic finds himself drawn to Kate even though an attraction between the two would be forbidden.  When Dominic ends up rescuing Kate, he can't stay away and finds himself falling hard for her and it is mutual.

Everything combusts though when the inevitable happens and Kate turns.  Everything Kate thought she knew about Dominic is a lie, or is it.  Now the vampires have found her and she is learning about her past, but who can she truly trust?

Highly entertaining red.  I so wanted Dominic and Kate to defy the rules.  Had a few surprising twist, well worth picking up for shifter/vampire fans.

Review
Zoe Granger has been living  within her carefully crafted cracked shell trying mend the pieces that shattered her life two years ago.  Her best friend Dylan "Dee" feels it is time to give her a much needed nudge.  With a natural talent for music, Zoe ends up in a band with Dee and his friend, a band that is quickly gaining traction and has Zoe being noticed by Will Strickland, the bass player of The Stabs.

Typically Will has no problem getting a woman, but he is bored of his reputation as a bad boy who takes every women who blinks to bed.  He notices Zoe long before she makes a name for herself and when her band The Devil's Tattoo gets a following, he pushes for the band to tour with them.  Hoping he will get a chance to spend time with Zoe, but some of his tactics are not working and Zoe is even more fascinating than he thought.

Excellent story.  Zoe has baggage and it is not revealed right away which I loved, you go to know more about her character and not how she had evolved over the last two years.  Will is a swoon worthy hunk and he is out of his depth with Zoe, he fumbles, mucks it up and can't seem to find an even balance to get close enough to express his interest.  Highly recommend.

Leonidis "Leo" Stefanos had not been planning on heading to his home in Greece, but when he fins out that his sisters friend Samantha Hope is coming he shows up. Determined to dislike the woman he believes ruined a planned marriage for his sister, he is curt in his manner and waiting to catch her in deception.

Samantha Hope has no idea why Leo hates her so, but is determined to enjoy the two week vacation her friend sent her on. When Leo begins to realize that he has been grossly misinformed he has to back-tread over the damage he has done, because Samantha is his one, his mate.

I was fully engrossed in this one but the end is so swift that I missed a bit of the chemistry and forgiveness on Sam's part. This does lead into the next book, which I promptly picked up. 3.75

Sam is struggling with her new role as mate to Leo, she feels he is keeping information from her and wants everything out there right away. Leo wants to gradually introduce the dangerous factors of being a Lycan to Sam, but realizing she is hurting by his vague responses, he does everything to earn her trust.

3.75 there is a bit more to this story that relates to the previous book. I wish there was more and that we could just read all of it at one instead of dragging it out. I like Leo and Sam, they are a great couple but I would rather see what happened in one book then a series.

Safe With Me (With Me in Seattle, #5)Safe With Me by Kristen Proby
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Retired SEAL Caleb Montgomery believes he is broken, which is why he has never pursued the interest he has in Brynna Vincent. Brynna radiates commitment with her two beautiful daughters, but when the reason she fled after seeing her ex-husbands murderer appears to have found her, Caleb is by her side.

Caleb is trying to resist the pull he feels with Brynna. Brynna wants Caleb but doesn't understand the mixed signals she has been getting. When Caleb gives in though and they begin he ends up falling harder, but how can a man who does not think himself worthy keep the woman who deserves better.

Caleb made me so mad in this story, I wanted to throw my kindle. This was another good book in the series, Brynna is full of life and her children are adorable. This was a bit unlike the first three where the men were completely smitten and persistent in their courtship but, where as Caleb is the runner in this story. Not sure who is up next, but looking forward to the next book.

Finding Sanctuary by Alicia White

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

No matter how hard Sophie Miller tries, her ex-husband manages to find her and her daughter. Finally resorting to see if she can seek the help of her cousin, she ends up in Sanctuary, Montana.

When Mason McLean sees Sophie and her daughter for the first time, he is off kilter with the immediate need to help the vulnerable woman. He can see the haunted look and he can't get it out of his mind.

Alex McLean knows his brother has met someone who could be the one they have been looking for. He doesn't know her story, but both Mason and Alex come up with a plan to earn her trust and create the family they know they can have with Sophie by her side.

Intriguing story, Sophie is a fighter but there is also a fearful side to her because of her ex. I liked that the author tackled the feelings of the daughter, she is just as much a victim and you feel like you got a full story with all four characters. Another great book from Alicia White.

Graham “Ham” Reece knew when he let Zara Cinders walk out of his life, he made the biggest mistake of his life. Burned enough times by women he had loved, Ham lives his life with a few simple rules, no settling down, no commitment.

Zara wished Ham had been the one, but over the years he never wavered over his life’s choices. She wanted babies, family, the whole she bang, and believes she found it with another man. It was time to let Ham go.

Three years later, her life is unraveling and she is beginning all over again. After seeing Ham on the news, she calls him and he comes back. Ham isn’t a fool and he plans to fully commit to Zara, but he has to first get her to realize he is back for good.

This was one of these books you pick up and find yourself wondering what happens next if you turn the page. I thought this was a more subdued Colorado Mountain stories, the characters are electrifying but this was more about second chances and correcting mistakes from the past. Zara is a fighter and Ham is like a big old teddy bear, quite the charmer but intense when he needs to be. Another fantastic story by Kristen Ashley.

Chiara Costiano has tried everything she could possibly think of to prove she is capable of taking over is company, but despite her best effort it falls on deaf ears. He is constantly trying to force her to date a man she finds about as desirable as a slick eel and when it looks like her life is in danger, she finds out he is selling his company to two strangers.

Cash Corbin and Zane Heston are not sure the why the sudden rush to sell the company, they are intrigued by Chiara and the more they get to know her the quicker they realize they have found the woman they have been looking for. Although Chiara is fighting with understanding her fathers betrayal and falling for two men who have managed to sweep her off her feet.

I liked this one but it had a couple of conflicting plot issues that at the end did not make sense. Overall good, but Chiara initially comes off as sweet and a bit more demure and then is like a hellcat instantly. Did not flow as good as some of the other books by the author.

Their Sweet Desire by Dixie Lynn Dwyer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Antoinette "Toni" Deluca as no interest in getting involved with another man, her last boyfriend seemed more intent on getting the property her bakery is on then her. Although he has not given up, Toni doesn't want to feel that vulnerable again.

Emerson Pierce is needing a coffee and snack, when he happens upon a delightful bakery called Bliss. The stunning barista catches his eye immediately but he believes she is too young and probably would use him for his money like the other women in his life. When he shares this detail with Stone Ryder, his best friend, Stone is intrigued enough to help Emerson make a decision and seek her out again.

Emerson is hooked where Toni is concerned, now he has to figure a way to introduce her to Stone and hopefully find a partner they both can love. Toni is receptive but when all three confess to what they are hiding, it may destroy their new found relationship before it even has a chance.

I liked this one a lot, of course I am a sucker for books that showcase food. Toni is a fun character, she is tough and not willing to be put in a vulnerable position again. Emerson and Stone both have issues with trust where women are concerned, especially now that they have a women who is turning out to be a stalker, but they know that Toni is it for them now they just have to convince her.

She also is not batting an eye when it comes to new neighbor Jacob Benson, she is waiting for the shoe to drop when the town tries to get him to form the same opinions.

When he finds out his best friend Cole Michaels is coming to visit, it looks like everything is falling into place. Never once in their friendship had they shared a woman, but Cole's attraction to Lorna is not one sided and they venture into a new relationship with new understanding. When an old threat of Jacob's returns seeking revenge though, the men will do anything to protect Lorna, however they never planned on the feisty woman to be able to take care of herself.

3.5 this had a bit of conflicting parts in the story that didn't flow right. I was not sure why Lorna stayed in this town, they treated her like dirt and yet she took it to an extent. You get told why but it still conflicted with her character which was a strong woman. Interesting story.

Evangeline Black has always been wary, guarded. No man has ever breeched her walls. Until Blue. He has never been denied something he wants, and now, he’s decided he wants her. As he sweeps her into his double life of seduction, intrigue, and danger, he helps her see beyond the darkness of her past. But as an enemy closes in, Blue will have to let Evie go to keep her safe—even though he'd rather die than live without her…
