Out at Home by J.L. Paul

Out at HomeOut at Home by J.L. Paul
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

For Taylor Lockwood her senior year was everything she dreamed about, she was dating one of the most popular boys in school and she was in love. Should have been perfect, until she found out about the bet he had made with a friend in his pursuit of her.

Baseball player Brady Nolan has wanted a chance to makeup for the mistake he made with Taylor. When she shows up to interview him, he knows it is against her will but he plans to win her back anyway he can.

3.5
I had a little bit of trouble connecting with Taylor. She is pretty hostile towards Brady and although his arrogance has a certain charm, I wasn't sure why she would even go for him. There were parts that were really good, but it didn't click the way I had hoped it would.

Until the Sun Falls From the Sky by Kristen Ashley

Until the Sun Falls from the Sky (The Three, #1)Until the Sun Falls from the Sky by Kristen Ashley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Leah Buchanan grew up knowing that one day she could follow the footsteps of her families service to vampires. The Buchanan women are held in the highest regard when it comes to concubines, they allow the vampires who chose them at the Selection to feast upon their blood until they are no longer in need and released to a comfortable lifestyle throughout their days. However Leah is completely different than her family, she has temper, opinion, and isn't quite sure she even wants to be a concubine and follow the strict rules cast upon them.

Vampire Lucien is one of the most powerful vampires out in there and he has had his eye on Leah for twenty years. He has been waiting until she was available before she was summoned to the Selection and he would enter into an agreement with her. Everything about her is different, she manages to fight him in every way possible. Lucien wants a different life with his concubine, he wants it all and plans to tame her. Causing the Vampire Dominion to come down hard wanting to intervene with the firm line Lucien is crossing with Leah. Neither Leah or Lucien realized though that their journey is only the first in three prophesies that will change everything they have known.

I wasn't sure if I would enjoy a vampire story by Kristen Ashley, I am a huge fan of her books and this was a bit off the beaten track from her other stories. That said I was blown away, Lucien is a very alpha man. He says something and expects it to be done, Leah however doesn't care and when a few well fought out fights lead to an unhappy resolution, Leah tries a different tact, driving Lucien nuts. It was like an intense chess game, game, set, match...loved this story and completely reread worthy. It was very rough in a few spots where you can't believe what one of them did, but it perfectly blends with this mismatched couple and I think since Lucien has lived for centuries he forget the little things that make Leah tick. Another 5 stars for Kristen Ashley.

Finding Hope by Krystal Shannan Spotlight Excerpt and Review

Finding Hope
Pool of Souls Book 2

Warning: The plot thickens with a passel of pissed off Olympians, but Ares and Aphrodite are in for a double dose of trouble! More Olympians join the mix in Finding Hope: Pool of Souls Book 2. A jewel addict, a kick-ass possibly-virgin huntress, and an insatiable ancient oracle are just a few. But don’t worry; Ares and Aphrodite are still front and center.

Addison Connelly has given up on men. She is disappointed yet again when her best friend tries to play matchmaker, and the match falls flat…or does it? Her friend knows all Addison needs is a chance, a little hope, and maybe a dropkick in the right direction. With an extra push from Aphrodite, will this lonely soul learn to trust again? Or will she run from the only man who could make her happy?

Adrian Colter, Nashville Police Detective and certifiable bachelor, puts his foot in his mouth in a big way when his roommate’s fiancé tries to match him up with her best friend. After making a horrible first impression, can he earn the trust of a woman who won’t speak a civil word to him?

Adrian isn’t the only one trying to earn the trust of a beautiful woman. While Ares fights to rebuild the trust he lost thousands of years ago with the Goddess of Love, his parents do what they do best —show off their greed and selfishness. Will he find the hope and forgiveness he so desperate seeks or will his parents destroy his chance at happiness?

Excerpt:
“Now you listen here, Adrian Colter.  I agreed to let you take Tom out hunting last weekend. If you can’t do this little favor for me… so help me…”
Adrian snorted a laugh.  He heard her hitting Tom and telling him to stop laughing.  There was a short period of golden silence, but Adrian knew better.  Missy’s brain was switching gears for another angle of attack.
“You won’t have to talk flowers and dresses with Addi.  Lord knows, I can’t even remember the last time she wore a dress.  She lives on a ranch in Montana.  Surely you can come up with something to say to a cattle rancher’s granddaughter.”
Adrian ran his hands through his hair.  He grabbed his brown leather coat from the edge of his bed.  “Fine.”  He took a few lumbering steps to the door, and then he opened it to Missy’s smiling face.  Tom was standing a few feet back – grinning. “If I didn’t know better, I might think you two planned this little scene.”
He caught a downward glance from Missy and another from Tom.  “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I have no desire to be set up with anyone, especially a wedding hookup.  How lame do you think I am?”  Adrian shook his head and stomped past Missy into the living room.  “This is really low, you guys.  I am not desperate.”
“Adrian,” Missy started, “we know you’re not desperate, but Addi…”
Realization struck.  The setup wasn’t for him; it was for her friend. Adrian whirled around to face Missy again.  “Dammit, Missy.  There’s a reason some women can’t get a man.  Usually it’s because something is wrong with them.”
He regretted the words as soon as they’d left his mouth.  Missy’s eyes watered, and even Tom’s gaze held utter loathing. His own self-disgust made him grimace.
“You are an asshole, Adrian Colter.”  Her voice was sharp, anger clipping every word. “Daddy will pick her up.  You can just sit here and drink your beer. Alone.”  She grabbed her yellow handbag from the couch and her coat from the hook at the front door.  “Tom?”
Adrian frowned as Tom hurried to her side and helped her into her long pink wool coat.
“You need to chill out, Adrian,” Tom shouted before slamming the door closed.
Damn it all to hell! Adrian kicked off his boots and sank into his huge recliner.  He’d made a mess of this one.

Review:
4 stars
When Aphrodite meets Detective Adrian Colter she has a plan for the unexpecting detective,  she knows who his soul mate is and plans to get them to meet.  Should be fairly easy for the goddess of love, but that was before Addison Connelly who has not only sworn off men, she has  a temper that completely derails her first meeting with Adrian.  With mischief afoot  when a jewel addict steals from Aphrodite, it creates a few ripples in Adrian and Addison’s relationship.

This  was an enjoyable, fun filled story.  I loved the mixture of the mythical gods and the modern day love story.  Addison is a handful, but Adrian’s perception of her before he even meets her has him off kilter whenever she is near.  This is book number two in the Pool of Souls series by Krystal Shannan.  Excellent read, I hope there is more to come in the series.

Venetian Love Knots by Normandie Alleman

Venetian Love Knots
by Normandie Alleman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
In Venice, Allison Fox will find love in the arms of two men. Her past collides with her future in a battle for her heart. Which one will win?
Travelling to Venice to be the maid of honour in her best friend’s wedding sounds like a great vacation, and a romantic way to spend Valentine’s Day. But when Allison Fox discovers who the best man is, she is torn between duty and self-preservation.
It has taken Allison four years to put her tumultuous relationship with the rodeo cowboy behind her after a violent incident ripped them apart. Now Allison must find a way to face her past and find closure with her old flame. But will she be able to put the past behind her?
Cole is the Texas cowboy who has never got over his love for Allison. But when he declares his love for her after all this time, is she strong enough to walk away from the intense passion they share?
For years Nico, a handsome Italian, was committed to nothing but his work. Nico never expected he would meet an American beauty who would awaken in him a desire to love again. Once he finds her, Nico vows to never let Allison go.
It will be a Valentine’s Day to remember, but who will win Allison’s heart?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:
As he ran the brush down Tinaya’s coat, his mind wandered to Allison. She was all he could think about these days. He had a girlfriend, Mary Ann, whom he saw a couple of times a week, but she couldn’t compare to Allison. For years he had been trying to find someone who could excite him like Allison had. He had never found a replacement for her, and he figured he never would.

Cole knew that he was not really the settling down type. Mary Ann called him a flight risk. Poor girl had no idea how true that was.

But if this trip to Italy was his only chance to make things right with Allison and get her back in his life, then he was going to have to pull out all the stops. He would win her heart. His life had been nothing special without her. His memories of time with her were the brightest spots in his life, other than some of his rodeo wins.

He patted Tinaya absentmindedly, thinking of what it would be like to stroke Allison’s tender flesh again. Cole visualised Allison’s naked body beneath his. He could see her face, her eyes glowing with lust, wanting him and only him. If it took settling down to have that again…now that might be worth considering.

Leader of the Pack by Leighann Phoenix

Leader of the PackLeader of the Pack by Leighann Phoenix
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Aislinn has been on the run since she escaped from her deranged ex-boyfriend who had plans for her that would have brought a life of misery as well as losing all her control. At another dive bar as a waitress, she is used to sticking up or herself and defending unwanted advances, especially to sleazy bosses. When a man comes in looking down on his luck, Aislinn treats him the same as she would everyone else, but this is no ordinary man and he has never received the unabashed directness from another human or not.

Cullen does not want to be mated, but drowning his sorrows seems like the only way to escape the disgust he feels for agreeing to mate someone he doesn't like or want. Meeting Aislinn though throws him for a loop, everything about her calls to his wolf. He doesn't know why but he knows he needs her in his life at least some form of it, but when his mating goes awry he wastes no time to claim the one he knows is his true mate.

Wishing it would be a simple mating, Aislinn and Cullen fight an uphill battle when Aislinn's ex is back and wanting to claim her. The pack elders are suspicious of Aislinn who has an untold past she is only beginning to discover, and a spurned ex-mate has plans of her own to be the head alpha.

Excellent read, this was quite different with the aspects of the pack, there is an openness to the sexuality and exchange of partners I was not quite expecting. Not sure the story needed all of that, but I was compelled to continue reading all the same

The Wild Ones (The Wild Ones, #1)The Wild Ones by M. Leighton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Camille "Cami" Hines is not sure what she is looking for, but despite her reluctance she is still dating her pseudo-boyfriend Brent who her father thinks is ideal for her. That is until she meets Patrick "Trick" Henley, who has her wondering how she ever looked at anyone else. Just one little glitch though in the electric attraction they feel for one another, he works for her father Jack Hines and Jack has made it clear where Trick stands in his eyes and that is he is no good for his daughter.

This had one of the best pickup lines I have read in a book. You are rooting for Cami and Trick, but they have so many obstacles in their path it won't be easy. Another wonderful read by M. Legihton.

Blurb:

“Chloe.”

His quiet voice urged her eyes back to his.

“I will make you a promise. When I return it, I will do everything in my power to establish a sacred resting place for such an important item. A place where it can be viewed, its story can be told, and ’tis safe from thieves and those who would wish to use it for corruption.”

For one endless moment, Chloe couldn’t breathe. Compromise, she hadn’t anticipated. But what he offered was exactly what she desired—if the relic proved to be what he claimed. She didn’t know how to respond to such a generous offer. Didn’t know how to look away from his mesmerizing gray eyes that revealed such honesty she could feel his words in her soul. He meant it. He really meant it.

So had Blake, at one time.

She shook off the spell and frowned. “What if it isn’t the Veronica? What if it’s just another cloth, or what if nothing’s inside at all?”

A smile lifted the corners of his mouth. “’Tis not, but should it be, you may do what you will with both the reliquary and the contents. We could open it tonight and solve those questions.”

“Don’t be silly. There are processes. Protocols I established with my team to ensure every relic was treated the same way.” Her frown deepened as she remembered her students and her brother. “This isn’t just about me and you. Julian wants to witness the opening. Andy’s excited about it also. I have a whole team that came here in the middle of winter, hoping to find something of significance. Now we have. I won’t cut them out. And I won’t jeopardize the integrity of my hard work among my professional peers either.”

“I shall respect that.” His thumb stroked over the back of her palm, stirring to life all the awareness she so desperately wanted to ignore. Tingles raced up to her shoulder. Her pulse stuttered. In the core of her soul, something wholly unfamiliar awakened to that gentle back-and-forth motion.

“Will you trust I shall reveal the cloth when the time is appropriate?” His eyes said something else, a plea she didn’t dare consider: Will you trust me?

She glanced down at their joined hands, the warmth of his palm as enticing as water after a hot day amid the Egyptian sands. Strong fingers. A grip meant to soothe, yet prominent evidence of the power in his hands. Altogether masculine. Wholly appealing.

Against her will, her fingers tightened around his. She nearly sighed at the delight of holding on to him. They sat in her room, avoiding the subject of their earlier kiss. It had been so long . . . Did she dare take a leap of faith and believe in what he offered? His words and the physical pleasure?

Playing to Win by Jaci Burton

Playing to Win (Play by Play, #4)Playing to Win by Jaci Burton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cole Riley is the poster child for bad boy, no matter the exceptional amount of talent he has as a NFL player it hasn't stopped him from being traded to his home team the Traders. His agent and now wife to his cousin, will do everything in her power to keep Cole from being traded again including hiring a makeover/PR consultant who has a knack for working miracles.

Cole can't seem to take his eyes off of the feminine beauty at a party he is at with his team, when he meets Savannah and her southern sass he is more than intrigued. Not realizing she has been hired to help him clean up his act, he is both hostile and aroused by the blunt woman. Cole is willing, as much as it pains him, to listen to what she has to say, but he also knows she is fighting her attraction to him and he wants to uncover every secret she has along the way.

I am torn on this one, there were aspects I loved like the opening chapter thought it was perfect for drawing the reader in. I thought the chemistry was electric and loved the witty taunts between Cole an Savannah. What I did struggle with was Cole's attitude with everyone is out to get him, but it is not fully explained why, there is a reason an it is mentioned but more in passing than actually a realization moment. Savannah, although I liked her a lot, I did think at times she droned almost to the edge of being preachy but at the same point it worked for what she needed to do with the story. Overall another fantastic book from Jaci Burton, I just wondered if there was some pieces left on the editing floor.

Reflections of the Wolf by Lori King

Reflections of the Wolf (The Gray Pack #2)Reflections of the Wolf by Lori King
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Liam Gray can't believe he has met his mate, having been burned before with damaging repercussions he is weary of what fate has in store for him. Tina Jameson is not looking for another relationship, especially after her last disastrous ending to what she thought would be happily ever after. Even though both Liam and Tina are fighting the mating call, both have quite a bit in common including guilt over their past.

I gave this a four, even though there was thing that gnawed at me. I thought Liam had more to overcome than Tina and she was like a yoyo on her reasoning for not wanting to mate with Liam. I understood where it was coming from but I think she lacked some sensitivity and her bluntness was hard to swallow at times. I did think there was great chemistry and once the baggage was dropped the story was back on track.

Offside (The Barker Triplets, #1)Offside by Juliana Stone
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Billie-Jo Barker left home a hockey phenom, only to return at the age of twenty-four injured and unable to play in the pros again. Lost and drifting, Billie-Jo sees that the local town has joined a hockey league, she wants in especially since it is no contact, but the men in the small town of Waterford don't want to play with a girl, especially one who can kick their ass on the rink. Adversity has never been a problem for Billie-Jo and she can run with the punches, but factor in Logan Forest and she knows she is in trouble.

Billie-Jo had a crush bordering on true love on Logan, but he didn't notice her even if she was one of three triplets. He carried a torch for her sister and one little opportunity arose to show Logan she was every bit as good as her sister, but it backfired leaving her devastated and running off to the big leagues. Logan however is seeing Billie-Jo in a different light, he wants her, the commitment-phobe is breaking all the rules when it comes to Billie-Jo, but when he finds out her secret will he be willing to forgive and forget?

Highly entertaining, I loved this story. It was gruff, blunt, seductive, and unexpected. I thought Logan was yummy, he is used to being sought after and has the reputation to prove he is the love em and leave them type, but Billie-Jo has him confused and uncertain.

Beowulf and Roxie by Marisa Chenery

Beowulf and Roxie (Wulf's Den, #1)Beowulf and Roxie by Marisa Chenery
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Roxie doesn't know how she let her best friend talk her into going to the Wulf's Den, but she did and now finds herself staring at the most handsome man she has ever met. Roxie has never been the type to go clubbing or pick up random men, she is more a homebody and although the heat she feels when she is with Beowulf is startling she is not willing to just jump in the sack to satisfy a need.

Beowulf knows Roxie is his mate, but curiously enough she is putting up quite a fight resisting the bond between them. He knows he should tell her that he is a shifter, he knows he should divulge that he is indeed the Beowulf that stories are told about, but mostly he just wants her to get comfortable with being his mate and not keep running off. When an ancient marking appears on her wrist, it appears there is more to Roxie than he imagined putting not only her life in danger but the fate of the pack in her hands.

Great story, I enjoyed that Roxie was skittish and she had to think things through before she just succumbed to her fate. Has a very interesting twist in the story that I thought really elevated the tale.

Catching Meara by Christine Young Book Tour and Giveawway

Catching Meara
by Christine Young

BLURB:

Meara Thorton was a feisty, world class computer hacker—cornered by the FBI and shockingly given the chance to be their newly acquired technical analyst.  Brilliant and intuitive, yet aching with the loss of everyone she has cared about, her restless heart led her to discover a love she fought and a world she didn't know could possibly exist.

Jace McKenna was an enigma, a loner, impossibly handsome, sincere and committed. The Apache shapeshifter blood running through his veins burned hotter than the blistering Sierra Madre sun. Jace knew the moment he caught Meara's scent she was his for eternity.

Excerpt:

"I can't--sleep. I can't close my eyes."

"Why ever not?"

"I'm afraid that cat will show up again. Any suggestions? Any besides keep all the doors and windows closed?" Like a drill sergeant, she marched through his open front door.

She didn't hear footsteps behind her, but she did hear the door close. He was always as silent as cat stalking a mouse. She didn't sense his presence until his hands were on her and he was spinning her around. Surprised, she cried out. The spinning sensations caused her to stumble. She fell down to the floor and he followed.

She was beneath him and he was sprawled over her, taut, tense, his chest naked and the muscles rippling. She wanted to trace the rosettes on his body. They were everywhere and she'd never noticed how many he had. His eyes seemed to blaze, searing, into her. "Meara," he began. "Dear god, Meara." Then he fell silent. He groaned as his fingers moved into her hair...and he was kissing her...really kissing her.

Not as he had kissed her earlier. Not lightly, but with hunger, raw and animalistic. Openmouthed, his lips moved upon hers, wet, hot, enticing a response from her. His tongue swept her mouth, thrust inside and demanded she respond equally. Then he drew away, kissing her face, the tip of her nose, her closed eyelids. His tongue rimmed her lips before slipping inside her mouth again, so deeply the inferno raced throughout her body. She needed to touch him if only to reassure herself this too was not a dream.

She wanted to feel the warmth of his body and explore the contours that were all male animal, sleek and hard. And in turn she felt an overwhelming urge, the fire, and the desperation to have him at any cost.

His lips rose above hers just a fraction of an inch. She touched them delicately with her tongue, encircling them, nipping lightly. He held still to her gentle assault then swept his arms around her. Once again their mouth melded and the tasting and sweeping and hunger were shared. When they broke apart again, his hold on her eased, but the tension in him seemed greater, explosive. His breath fanning her cheeks, he whispered. "Meara, I'm sorry. I understand it's too soon. It's just..."

Beneath him she lay still, wondering what on earth was happening to her. It wasn't too soon. Yet maybe he had the right of it. Perhaps he didn't want her in that way. She had teased and taunted him, shown up at his door and practically begged for the kiss--for sex. Still she wondered how he could just walk away. It seemed to him the kiss was a mistake, but she'd live with the mistake and cherish the moment.

He was on his feet, one hand holding tight to his towel, the other reaching down to her, helping her to stand. She gazed at him, her fingers still entwined with his, her lips swollen and soft and wet from the kiss.

"Jace," she whispered his name. He didn't speak, and his eyes focused with hers. "I'm not what you want. I know I'm not the kind of girl..." Her voice trailed away miserably. She barely knew him, and she had imposed herself after long days at work. But she wondered if his desire was great enough, if she could seduce him.

"Meara, hush, you are exactly the kind of girl I would want." His voice was a low growl, his words fraught with tension, his eyes blazing.

Review:

The only rules Meara Thorton has been following for the last couple of years is her own, as a one of the elite computer hackers out there her time has suddenly come up.  Faced with jail or working for the FBI, Meara quickly falls into a new pattern helping catch serial killers.

Jace McKenna knows the minute he puts the cuffs on Meara, she is his mate.  How do you explain to the woman who is your soul mate that you are a jaguar shifter, without her running for the hills.  Wen it looks like Meara has acquired a stalker of her own, Jace first has to keep her safe before confessing who he really is.

Entertaining story.  I thaught Meara created a perfect balance with Jace.  Jace is used to bieng in control, except where Meara is concerned.  He puts Meara's needs first, but his jaguar is ready to claim her and never let her go.
