Excerpt:

Chapter 6
1915 New York City

Bryson and Dana walked arm and arm down the blustery New York street laughing about the Christmas party they had just left. The snow was fresh and powdery. Neither of them felt the icy cold snowflakes floating down and speckling their coats because they were wrapped in the warmth of each other’s company.
“Did you see how Charles acted after taking that last shot of whiskey?” Dana asked.
Bryson could not contain his laughter thinking about their friend’s drunkenness. Everyone who had been at the party was probably laughing about it on their way home, too, particularly the part when Charles took off his pants and danced on top of the piano. Bryson laughed so hard people gave them odd passing glances.
“Yes.” Bryson gave a bright smile and grabbed her face to kiss her as they stood in the middle of the sidewalk. He wanted people to stop and stare at his beautiful wife. He wasn’t afraid to show her off every chance he got. The women cooed softly at the sweetness of the moment while the men ushered their women forward murmuring about how indecent their public display of affection was for the community. Truthfully they just didn’t want their wives to get any ideas.
It took Dana a few seconds to catch her breath. She couldn’t believe he would do something that indecent in public. It didn’t matter to her, however, because it felt way too good to be wrong. They stepped off the curb without a care in the world; Dana held onto Bryson’s arm tightly and could not stop staring into his eyes.
A few seconds later Dana felt a sharp pain and a crushing blow to her arm. It was as if a freight train slammed into her right side. She instantly started sobbing from the pain and confusion of the situation. She felt like a block of ice was on top of her chest as she lay sprawled out on the ground. Her legs were straight out together in front of her but her arms were stretched out wide, going in two different directions. Her head turned slowly to the left when she heard a woman screaming and she saw Bryson on the ground with his eyes wide open. She blinked a few times to clear up her vision and then she spotted a pool of blood circling his head like a flowing halo.
Dana tried to push against the woman lying on top of her but the person was impossible to move no matter how hard she tried.
“You don’t want to see this, you’re safe now,” the woman said softly in her ear; she sounded just like her.
“Soul sister?” Dana asked as she felt herself losing consciousness. She heard the chaos of the world going on around her but then she slipped into a black void. When she came to in a small nearby hospital she was disoriented and feeling miserable. There was a dull ache in her head and the vision in her right eye was blurry. She thought she saw a petite woman standing in the doorway, maybe she knew what had happened to Bryson.
“Where is my Bryson? Is he OK? What happened?”
The woman walked over to the bed and placed a hand on her head. Dana could see the woman was wearing a nurse’s outfit and she guessed she was in a hospital. The woman’s hand felt ice cold against her burning flesh.
“I’m sorry to tell you, ma’am, but your husband was hit by a moving vehicle. He suffered a bad head injury and he is no longer alive. I am so sorry.”
“No, wait. We were just coming back from a Christmas party. When did this happen?”
“You stepped off the side walk with your husband, ma’am. Apparently you could not see the car and the car could not see you. A woman who looked oddly like you pushed you out of the way and saved your life. Your husband didn’t make it. I’m very sorry. Would you like some water or a cup of juice?”
“No, no, thank you. Can I see him at least?”
“Not now honey. I really think you should get some rest. There’s a young woman who is here to see you. She says she’s your sister. Are you ready to see her?”
Dana coughed deeply and felt a liquid build up in her throat that she quickly swallowed back down; she was afraid to see who it was.
“OK,” was all she could seem to get out of her throat.
Her soul sister quietly stepped into the room as she faced the wall. She didn’t want the woman to see her nervousness or confusion. As much as she wanted to hug her sister she also wanted to punch her.
“Why didn’t you save my husband?” Dana asked choking back tears but keeping a straight face. As the tears filled up her eyes, her cheeks began to sting and swell
“The car came so fast. I didn’t have time to save you both. I’ve seen you with Bryson before and I know how much you loved him, I’m so very sorry.”
“What is your name?” Dana asked, sitting up against the pillow.
“Ani,” She said softly.
“Ani, I don’t think I want to live much longer. I sold my soul to save my husband’s life and Donovan took him away from me. I really don’t see any reason to live anymore.”
Ani sat down in a chair and moved closer to the side of the bed. She placed her hand on Dana’s head and felt that she had a slight temperature. She would notify a nurse as soon as she left the room. Ani loved her sister and if her sister died then she died too.
“Donovan had nothing to do with what happened. Your husband’s time came up again and he was taken. Donovan didn’t order his death. I’m sure he is very concerned about this and knows how much this hurts you. He is good at feeling things like this.”
“Your kind feels? You don’t want me to kill myself because then you will die too. Frankly, I don’t care what happens to you right now. You’re such a small fragment of me; I don’t even think you’re real. This is just a bad nightmare. I’ll wake from it; I’ll be at home warm and safe with my parents. Bryson never actually existed and I sure as hell know you don’t either.”
Dana turned her head back to the wall and let the tears flow freely down her face. She placed her hand over her mouth to stifle the cries; her heart felt like it had broken into a million pieces. Now, she couldn’t live for anybody else but herself. Dana saw the look of despair in her sister’s face but it wasn’t enough for her to let her soul sister into her life.
“I’ll never turn my back on you when you need me, no matter how far away you are or how much danger you’re in. I know we’re supposed to be twins but I feel like you’re my baby sister.” She gave a light chuckle and then headed for the door. “I’ll be back to visit you tomorrow, and the next day and the next day. Even if you never want to see me it’s OK, but I’m not going to be without you any longer. I love you way too much.”
“I don’t care if you come back a million times. I will never talk to you again. Get the hell out of my room!” Dana threw a glass at Ani’s head. Ani moved her head slightly to the left as it flew into the wall and shattered into tiny pieces. She took a deep breath and nodded her head up and down slowly; she had to give her more time. Ani had been programmed to take on the evil ways of the world but Dana’s rose-colored glasses had just been stepped on.

REVIEW:

Dana and Ani are soul sisters, while one lives her life as human the other lives as vampire.  Ani protects her soul sister in the middle of an attack, causing a drastic change of events for both sisters which could ultimately lead them to death.  Ani steps up taking over their fate and possibly beginning her own legacy as vampire queen.

Mystical story, without delving too much into the plot and giving away important key points Dana and Ani are polar opposites.  I thought this had a very unique twist to vampire stories and liked the flashback in times that helped piece the journey together.  The first in a trilogy, if you like paranormal this one is for you.

Maybe Too Good To Be True by Christy McKee Book Tour and Giveaway

Book BLURB:

Gabrielle March has always known her place in the world and it is clearly not in the ranks of the rich and famous. Now she’s about to get an amazing gift from someone who is rich and famous that will rewrite her past, change the course of her future and put her life in danger. As someone who’s  always considered herself merely a spectator in life, Gabrielle will have to break out of the confines of that mind set to make her dreams a reality. All she needs is a mega dose of courage and some positive thinking— two traits in short supply—to finance her  own video production company and take her rightful place in a world that should have been hers all along.

After surviving the divorce from hell, corporate king pin, Pierce Hastings, is back in the game. Finding the right woman was not happening until the exasperating, opinionated, utterly charming Gabrielle March invades his life. He’s baffled  that  a woman so outwardly bold and confident  harbors such self doubt and low self esteem beneath her skin. Pierce wants to spend the rest of his life with her but first Gabrielle must learn to love herself and believe in her amazing talent. Known as the “fixer,” Pierce wars with himself to remain “hands off” until Gabrielle figures things out for herself and chooses to become the woman he knows she can be.

Excerpt:

“Newspapers were never very favorable to my father,” he explained. “To the best of my knowledge, a newspaper reporter has never been invited to this house.” He wouldn’t tell her that his father referred to them as a pack of ill-bred, bloodthirsty hounds. Edward Hastings refused to return calls or grant interviews to any newspaper.
“Are you insinuating that I’m here under false pretenses?”
From beneath his sunglasses, Pierce looked directly into her fiery green eyes. "No, not at all Miss March. I was merely stating a fact.”
“The fact is, Mr. Hastings, it is not a reporter’s job to be favorable. They are in the business of finding and reporting the truth.”
"Nobly put, Miss March.” The woman certainly didn’t pull any punches.
“I hope this will put you at ease, Mr. Hastings. I own the newspaper. It’s been several years since I single-handedly set out to ruin anyone.”
Sarcasm, even with a lovely Southern accent, was still sarcasm.
"I see.” Pierce sounded duly impressed. “That’s certainly an accomplishment for such a young …” He froze when her eyes narrowed. What the hell was wrong with him? He careened from one blunder to the next.
"Tell me, is it my age or the fact that I’m a woman that bothers you?” Her face was considerably more colorful than the rest of her and he knew it had nothing to do with the heat.
Pierce was no chauvinist and certainly had no prejudice against successful females. After all, he’d been married to a talented trial attorney. Hadn’t he put his wife through law school? Hadn’t he supported Glenna in every way until she made partner in her firm and then announced that she’d changed her mind about having children and, by the way, she didn’t want to be his wife anymore either.
"I didn't mean that you weren't responsible.” His eyes returned to the very entertaining Miss March who had just snapped up the ball and was ready to run with it.
"What would someone like you know about responsibility anyway? You've probably never put in an honest day’s work in your entire over-privileged life. Flying around the world trying to stay one step ahead of reality. One of these days you’re going to have to come down to earth and see what it’s like in the real world.”
Where did the woman get her information? She’d obviously pegged him as some sort of wealthy derelict. Fired up, she was somethingMisinformed maybe, but she had balls of steel. "For a newspaper woman, you’re lacking in your facts, Miss...."
Frenzied barking drew Pierce's attention skyward. Just as he looked up a huge black creature soared through the air, plunging down on top of him, upending his float and catapulting him to the bottom of the pool.
Max exuberantly dog paddled to his mistress and was rewarded with an affectionate pat on his broad head. "Perfect timing, Max." Gabrielle smiled and broke into laughter.
"What did you do, signal him to attack?” Pierce sputtered, trying to locate his five hundred dollar sunglasses.
"Don't be silly.” She laughed. "It's just Max's way of thanking you for the afternoon snack."
Max offered up a cheerful bark. The behemoth black dog actually looked pleased with himself. He was a retriever for God’s sake; he should be down there looking for Pierce’s glasses.

4 Stars

Gabrielle March can't believe the mess her father left her with.  When she receives a letter from a woman she has never met who claims she has information about her father and a terrible wrong that needs to be righted, Gabrielle finds her life turned upside down.

The revelation leaves broke Gabrielle financially wealthy and the object of Pierce Hastings interest.  Pierce is unsure about Gabrielle, having been burnt bad by his ex-wife he is wondering if there is more to Gabrielle than she shows. A few misunderstandings, heated moments, and some sizzling chemistry Pierce and Gabrielle find themselves falling for one another but  questions about her father's past and the choices Gabrielle has to make about her future could tear them apart.

I enjoyed this story quite a bit, it is a mystery and romance all in one. I thought Pierce was interesting, his temper and issues with trust have him eating crow a bit, but it makes him a believable character with flaws which is refreshing to read.

BIO:

In one media or another, Christy McKee has written her entire life.  In middle school, she started a neighborhood newspaper in her hometown in Ohio.  Stories about whose poodle just had puppies or where the Millers spent their vacation were pretty boring—at least to her— so she embellished with a few bits of overheard gossip  which got her into big time trouble with the neighbors.  Amid a flurry of apologies issued by her parents, Christy’s news operation folded overnight and she was shipped off to a nearby summer camp.  Clearly she was not cut out to be a newspaper woman.

Christy’s degree in Radio-TV-Film opened a world of creative possibilities. She enjoyed her work as a reporter and news anchor in Missouri and Ohio, but after a few years she gave in to her creative itch and moved into production. Although not as glamorous as being “on air” it satisfied her growing passion to create a story and characters—even if those characters only existed inside a 30 second TV commercial. It was a short time fix for someone who craved a more diversified range of opportunities.  Christy took a brave leap—sacrificing a regular paycheck— to work as a full time freelancer,  writing/producing everything from travel brochures to radio commercials. It wasn’t enough— she wanted to create her own fictional world and fill it with unforgettable characters. Finally three years ago, Christy beat back self-doubt and embraced the risk and exhilaration of writing and never looked back.

After four incarnations and a year under the bed, Christy’s debut novel Maybe Too Good to Be True was released in August, 2012. She lives in Ohio with her family  and her two “Lab” assistants, Gracie and Lambeau.

Love In The Afternoon by Alison Packard

Love in the AfternoonLove in the Afternoon by Alison Packard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When Kayla Maxwell got the job on the hottest daytime soap on tv, she thought she would finally get her chance at showing her range as an actress for however long it lasts. When her character gets paired with the shows favorite idol and son to an academy award winning actor, Kayla is thrilled with the idea of learning from the talented man.

Sean Barrett is not as excited to be paired with the newbie on the show, he has nothing against her personally but he doesn’t want a star struck actress to contend with. The first day on set together is an eye opener, not only is the stunning actress talented her laid back attitude has Sean intrigued into wanting to get to know her better, but he has a firm rule, no dating actresses.

Here Be Sexist VampiresHere Be Sexist Vampires by Suzanne Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Sam Parker was turned into a vampire, she did not realize her life would take a dramatic turn. As a consort/assassin for the last three years for her vile maker, Sam just tries to get by on a daily basis looking for an out. That out comes in the form of a mind changing offer, try out for the Grand High Masters Vampire Army. It is a rare offer especially for a woman, but Sam's gifts are unprecedented and would be a huge asset to the Army.

Of course when she meets Commander and heir to the Grand Master, Jarod, he makes his intent clear she is perfectly suited as a..consort and the sooner she comes to his bed the quicker she can go back to her life. Sam though has other ideas, including whipping his ass for his sexist behavior. The challenge is set and when Jarod is told Sam will not be his trainee rather his co-worker, all bets are off the temperamental vixen has Jarod determined to make her is, but she won't settle to be treated as a piece of meat in his harem.

Absolutely one of the funnest vampire stories I have read in a long time, Sam is a kick in the pants and tough to boot. She completely keeps Jarod off guard and he struggles, boy does he struggle with his arrogant demeanor. Definitely reread worthy.

His Double Delight by Dixie Lynn Dwyer

Her Double Delight (The Sinful 7 of Delite, Texas Series, #1)Her Double Delight by Dixie Lynn Dwyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The beginning of a new series by Dixie Lynn Dwyer. Seven women are on the run finding themselves working together to establish a club in Delite, Texas. Susanna Cooperton is beautiful and the organizer when it comes to saving the women and the club, she has also caught the eye of Sheriff BJ Parker and his brother Monte. They have been biding their time to get to know Susanna, but her walls are tougher to crack than any obstacle they have ever incurred. They don't know the extent of Susanna's past, but as they begin to explore a relationship with her they want answers, the problem is Susanna's impulse to save two women has put her back in danger and B.J. and Monte may not be able to save her in time.

I am a big fan of Dixie Lynn Dwyer, but this one was not as good as the rest. It definitely has possibilities but I was a little confused by Susanna because on one hand she is an incredibly strong woman and the other she is reticent and confused which didn't quite meld. I probably will reread to see if it was just my mood for the day or something.

By Catherine Bybee
Not Quite Series Book One

Publisher Montlake
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book Description:

Even if she had time to date, which she doesn’t, she’d be determined to provide her son with a more secure upbringing than the one she had—and that would mean a husband with big bucks. She doubts a carefree dreamer like Jack can provide the financial stability she needs. But Jack’s daring charade may rob him of the holiday wish he wants most of all…

About the Author:
New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee was raised in Washington State, but after graduating high school, she moved to Southern California in hopes of becoming a movie star. After growing bored with waiting tables, she returned to school and became a registered nurse, spending most of her career in urban emergency rooms. She now writes full-time and has penned the novels Wife by Wednesday and Married by Monday. Bybee lives with her husband and two teenage sons in Southern California.

Interview:

I love the idea of Not Quite Dating, how did you come up with the idea?

How many songs are there about couples who are friends and not lovers? I thought it would be a nice change to have one party (Jack) pursue a woman (Jessie) who made it perfectly clear that she wanted nothing to do with dating him.

The Not Quite series is all about the image of what isn't Quite as it seams.

How did you know you would become a writer?

I had to write. It really wasn't a choice... I'd come home from long 12 hour shifts in the ER and need to decompress. I'd think of the happiest things there were in life and start to write. Funny... it wasn't until my ER career was behind me that I worked hard to finish that first book. Then it was all over. I finish nearly every story I start.

I see you once worked as a waitress, did you use any of your own experiences as a waitress in the story?

Oh, that's a funny question considering Jessie is a waitress at Denny's. And yeah, I worked as a waitress at Denny's. Graveyard shift. I can't tell you how much that sucked. But you do what you have to do to pay the bills sometimes.
My readers will find waitresses and nurses in my stories. Mother's and sisters... all of which I am. There are plenty of my books that have heroines who are nothing like me, but why re-invent the wheel? I write about what I know... and I write what about I want to learn.

In my paranormal werewolf story, Embracing the Wolf... the heroine starts working in a Denny's where a hold up occurs.  I remember one night when a masked man walked into our restaurant and pulled the register off the counter and ran out the door. Yeah... I use my own experiences in my stories. I have a lot to share.

Review:

4 Stars

No matter how hard she tries Jessica “Jessie” Mann can’t quite get ahead, with her young son at home it seems every dollar she makes comes with another debt owed or something needing repaired.  Jack Morrison is on a weekend long bachelor party when he meets his waitress Jessie at the Denny’s they are eating at.  Although Jack turns on the charm, Jessie makes her intentions clear, not going to happen.

Jack is not used to a woman fawning all over him, but Jessie thinks he is a dreamer scratching two pennies together like herself.  Jessie is not looking for love, she is looking for stability and the persona Jack is pretending to be has her conflicted.  She is falling for Jack, but she doesn’t want to be his regret in the future.  The problem is Jack is a billionaire and kept his wealth and stability hidden from Jessie hoping for a chance of her falling in love with him as the man he is, not what he has.

Wonderful story, Jack regrets starting with the little white lies and plans to come clean but every time he is in Jessie’s company he finds himself falling harder and unable to resist her simplest touches.  Reminded me of a modern day Cinderella story but with a twist. Excellent read.

Onyx Knight has yearned to leave her tiny hometown behind for years. With her parents’ support she attends the local university where she has developed a not-so-innocent crush on her Medieval History professor, Cole Radcliffe. Family friends promise to help Onyx through this transition, but they demand certain things in return. Things she can't—and will not—give. When it becomes clear they are willing to get what they want from her by force, Onyx goes on the run.

Cole Radcliffe has his own secrets. When he finds Onyx in need of help, he takes her in, against his better judgment. He plans to keep her safe, but how can he keep her safe if he can’t even protect her from himself?

Excerpt:

"Take deep breaths, Nyxie. In and out," Marie coaxed in a soothing tone.

"Noooo," she wailed and the tears started coming full force.

"I know, baby. This isn't fair. It's not right. There were no two better people on this earth than your parents."

Onyx listened to her comforting words from far away. Her body began to feel strange. Fuzzy. Out of focus. She was aware of her world narrowing down, changing, spiraling into something tiny. A tingling, itchy sensation started to spread over her skin. Heat infused her cheeks and forehead. So hot...she was positively burning up. Without thinking about it, she started to rub her tongue over the roof of her mouth. A strange taste that she couldn't identify sat on the tip of her tongue.

"Aunt Marie...I don't feel very good."

"Oh baby, I hate that your mother can't be here to explain this to you. You'll be twenty in a few months, and she would have explained it all to you."

"Explain what?" The words came out garbled because suddenly her mouth wasn't working right. She felt like she was being turned inside out. She was hot. So unbearably hot, she'd never felt heat like this before.

When she came to, she was on the floor, looking at her room from a different and much lower perspective.

"Nyx, it's okay."

"Mwarrrr."

Excerpt:

Sarah placed the wine on the farmhouse-style table—not that there was much space for the bottle—paperwork and newspapers piled three and four high left little room for anything else. After she poured out two large glasses she stepped through to the tiny living room and took a seat on the dated sofa. There seemed to be a broken spring in the center as she sank down deeply.

She didn't get far with her future plans before she heard the creak of floorboards above her and the sound of the boiler in the kitchen switching off. Two more minutes and Travis was back in a T-shirt and jeans, his hair glistening with water droplets and his face was still unshaved. How the hell am I supposed to think about my future now! The familiar tingle accosted her body, and she felt every feminine urge in her whisper Him. We want him." The unfamiliar warmth rose from her chest to her temples.

"Are you hot? You're looking a little bit flushed." His forehead creased, giving him a V between his brows. He was very cute when he worried.

"Must be the wine. It does that to me sometimes." Nice lie. All wine ever did was make her horny—and right now, it was doing a fantastic job of that.

Travis disappeared into the kitchen and returned minutes later with two heavily laden plates. He placed them on the coffee table in front of them.

"Wouldn't it be easier to eat at the kitchen table?" Tipping her head back, she reacquainted herself with the table—paper mountain. "Hmm, perhaps not." She could probably cope with snuggling up next to him on the sofa.

Sarah moved to allow room for Travis, but as he took his place next to her, the seat dipped more than Sarah expected and she fell sideways, her upper body landing on Travis's lap. He smelled of a mountain stream in a forest glade: fresh and woodsy. His aroma was making her light-headed. It couldn't be the wine; she was much tougher than that. It had to be him. She was taking way to long to move…again.

"As comfy as this couch is, that broken spring usually pisses me off, but right now, not so much."

He smiled, and she thought she would lose herself in his eyes, but she also had the odd sensation of being safe and warm and something else that she couldn't pinpoint. Mildly alarmed by these feelings, she began to move away when he stopped her and his lips met hers. All of a sudden, she understood what she'd been missing before. He made her feel as if she'd come home.

Excerpt:

She turned to the third figure, and her grip on the gun tightened.

A tall man with fair hair. Something about the still figure caused a shiver of unease to trickle through her. When he pushed himself up onto his knees, she caught her first glimpse of his face. The world stopped.

Even after a thousand years, she knew him instantly, but her mind rejected the information.

"No." She shook her head. The hand holding the pistol dropped to her side, and the gun tumbled from her numb fingers. It couldn't be.

"Who is it?" Freya asked.

But Cass couldn't speak the name. She wasn't sure she could speak at all. Her throat felt tight, and she struggled to breathe, as though the air had been sucked from the atmosphere. Taking a step back, she came up against the standing stone behind her.

"Cass? Are you all right?"

Fuck no—she wasn't all right. She didn't know what she was, but "all right" did not come into it. Swallowing hard, she ran a calming mantra through her head. She hadn't needed them for so long, though once they were all that kept her sane. From old habit, the words flowed through her mind, and she was able to think again.

Callum.

Long dead. Yet...now in front of her. He couldn't be real. The last few days—seeing Jarrod again—had awoken the old hurts and fears. This was just a manifestation of the strain she'd been under, a figment of her tortured imagination.

Ignore him. Concentrate on the others.

And maybe he would vanish as quickly as he'd appeared.

The Barn Raising by Camryn Rhys

Blurb:

Childhood sweethearts Lori and Cal reunite after years of hurt and disappointment, but it's on less than good terms.

Alora 'Lori' Metcalf doesn’t want to reignite anything with Cal Fortiss.  When she returns to her hometown to run a barn raising, she doesn't expect to see her old high school boyfriend.  Or to still find him so appealing. The intensity that still lingers between them frightens her, and when Cal awakens more than just nostalgia in her heart, she knows it will risk more than just her employment.

Cal has spent twenty years getting over Lori, but even his hard-won cynicism can’t keep his desire at bay, especially when he sees her trotting out of his son's coffee shop in a snug business skirt.  But Lori isn’t interested in rehashing the past, and he's willing to let her have her way.

Can they put old grudges behind them and act on a passion they shared once, years ago, but long buried?  Or will they choose to remain haunted by what could have been?

Excerpt:

"Dammit, Alora. Will you stop? I’m not going to chase you all over town."

"Then go home, Cal."

Goddamit, her voice was the same. How could her voice be the same? He hadn’t seen her in twenty years, and she still sounded exactly the same.

"You can’t be civil to me on the street?" He increased his pace a bit, but he wasn’t going to run after her like some damn solicitor. He just wanted to talk to the woman.
