An Alpha's Path by Carrie Ann Ryan

An Alpha's Path (Redwood Pack, #1)An Alpha's Path by Carrie Ann Ryan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When Kade Jamenson agrees to a blind date with Melanie Cross, he doesn't expect to come away with much except a pleasant evening and maybe a one night stand. He is stunned when he realizes she is his mate, but he wants to tread carefully for he thought another was his mate and doesn't want to get burned again. As the night progresses, how does he convince the shy woman in front of him that she is his mate?

I give this a 3.75, I wish it had been longer. I was wanting more and felt like there was key elements missing from the story. Although it does come full circle you want a bit more to see the two characters struggle with Melanie's knee jerk initial reaction.

Love Comes For Halloween by Jennifer Conner Book Tour, Interview, and Giveaway

Love Comes for Halloween

Now it’s her turn.  Until she’s kissed, Jane, is the last one of her girlfriends to wear the Mobile Mistletoe. Feeling pressured by her friends, she jumps on her dad’s motorcycle and heads out on the open road. But she doesn’t get far before it breaks down. What else can go wrong? Will she be eaten by a bear?
Gage has a past he wants to forget. Retreating to the mountains, where he can build custom bikes and cars in seclusion, he wants to give back for the mistakes he’s made.
Neither Jane or Gage are looking for a relationship, but isn’t Halloween the perfect time of year to scare up some love?

Excerpt from Love Comes for Halloween:
“Well it’s working. You’re beautiful in the morning.” His gaze locked with hers and she knew he meant what he said.  “I don’t know how you manage to look so good. I look so bad I must look good.” He chuckled
She shifted feet and tucked her hair behind her ear. Gage must have just taken a shower, he smelled like manly spicy soap and shampoo and his hair was still damp at the tips. He was cute. He was very cute. What would he look like without all that beard scuff? She tipped her head and tried to imagine.
He took off the hood of the car and lay in on the workbench for her to begin airbrushing the eagle design. It was hard to concentrate on what she was doing when her eyes kept wandering to the fine set of Levi’s bent over the car which were attached to Gage’s rear end.
As hours passed, the afternoon sun heated the shop and soon Gage shucked off his flannel shirt and threw it over a chair. Jane’s pulse jumped when Gage reached over his head to stretch. He exposed a sliver of ab muscles and a trail of black belly hair. Oh my. Like a fine lady of the South, Jane wished she had a piece of paper to fan herself.

Interview:

It’s fun to have visuals in my head as I write my characters, especially the hero. (Wink) Many times, I print off the photos and have them at my writing desk for inspiration. I usually don’t go with too heavy of Alpha Males and more into characters who have baggage and need to turn things around. Braylon has a prison record from something dumb he did as a teen, and is hiding out to drop out of society.

I did have a true bad boy in mind. That visual is from a personal favorite man candy of mine and a true miracle makeover. A few years back I watched the DVD, The Gods of Football (girlfriends if you have not seen this it’s on Netflix and WELL worth the hour!). THIS football is Australian Rules Football and Rugby.  The players posed for a calendar to raise money for breast cancer. I have to tell you, I didn’t know they MADE guys like this. But there is a special section on the DVD about the player, David Williams. They call him ‘The Wolfman’ for a reason. Full shaggy beard, long scraggly hair. He started into the photo shoot and the photographer told him… no… it was not working and to cut his hair and shave the beard. OMG. He is one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen! He can rival ANY male GQ model. Google Him, you will not be sorry! Gorgeous!

From this
 To THIS!!!

And then there are not words… sigh

I have always loved soccer, but I think Rugby & Aussie Football may be my new favorite sport!

With Jane, I’m not sure. I wanted a woman who was strong and could match Braylon in wit and tattoos! Who would you have in mind? Maybe Rooney Mara from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in looks but WAY less personal baggage.

I hope you enjoy Loves Comes for Halloween as much as I enjoyed writing it!

I have had a ton of fun writing the Mobile Mistletoe series over the past year and it’s a good story of how I came up with the idea. I was at a Christmas shop with my best friend. Her daughter found this dorkey headband with a spring of plastic mistletoe dangling off it. She put it on and came up with the title, Mobile Mistletoe. Why start it on Valentine’s Day? That upped the stakes when four girlfriends make a pact to wear it until they are kissed. That was Christmas… now it’s Valentine’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day, The Fourth of July and now the last of the four, Jane for Halloween.

I left Jane as the last of the four because she’s the tattooed bad girl.

So what better to find than a bad boy J

Excerpt:

Breathing in short, sharp breaths, Zane followed her through the winding corridors of the Richter Stadium, past the women’s bathrooms and down a flight of stairs. He held his breath for a moment as he slid through the remaining security crew. His golden eyes zeroed in on the whipcord lean beauty, a few dark curls coiling down from the sensible bun she always wore it in.
She stopped, hesitating right outside the doors. Two more steps and he’d lose her to the nightlife, his identity keeping him from following her any farther. If fans saw him, his life would become a hurricane of screams and groping hands. He wasn’t in the mood to put on his usual charming-playboy air to deal with them and he knew that going furry on their asses would damage his career.
Now or never. As she stepped out, he lurched forward, his pulse pounding furiously at his throat, and he crossed the floor in three strides. His fingers curled around her shoulders, firm and commanding, though he knew she hated it when he pulled the alpha role. She spun and her lips formed a thin line, as if she’d been expecting this. She’d known. You couldn’t really lie to pack and get away with it.
“Charlie.” The one word was all he could say before her eyes pinned him. They were pale as a sheet of blue ice, staring up at him with a gentle ferocity that she’d only ever reserved for him. He had no doubts that she wanted him—he’d smelled it on her in the past, saw the way she looked at him sometimes, as if she was seeing through to his soul—but she was wary. Guarded. The walls around her heart were made of marble and he was left pounding both fists against the cool stone.
“You can’t leave.” His words were a statement. A fact.
“I can and I am,” she replied coolly.
“What about the guys? What about High Velocity? You’re just going to throw it all away?” He was surprised at the intensity behind his words, but he was far from done. “Are we not paying you enough? There’s always ways around that. How much will it take?”
She blew out a harsh expel of air and glanced down at his hand clamped around her arm, but she didn’t bother to pull away. Her winter gaze met his molten gold once more. “I’ve made my decision, Zane. You need to respect it. There comes a time in everyone’s career where they have to make a choice and take a stand. This is it. I’ve put in my notice, I’ve followed protocol. There shouldn’t be a problem.”
A growl slid up his throat, escaping with a rumble. “I don’t give a damn about protocol. You could flash your tits to the crowd if you wanted and we still wouldn’t fire you. I don’t care. You’re part of our group. And, like it or not, you’re part of the pack. My pack.”
“You and I both know that I’ve never really been part of the pack.” Her voice carried a touch of wistfulness. She was right—she’d always been a bit of a loner, keeping herself estranged from the members of Elysium, try as his parents might to welcome her in. But she’d never been distant with Zane and the guys and he wasn’t about to let that happen. Not now.
“You’re staying.”
She lifted a brow. “Since when are you my master?”
“Since you started talking crazy shit about leaving us!” He tamped his anger back down. He never had a temper. What was up with him? He took a deep breath, letting it whistle out his nose as he tried to soften his posture, tried to be less demanding. “We need you. Okay? I respect your decision to quit, but you don’t have to skip town and leave us. Just stay.” Please…
Her smile was tight. She shook her head slowly, like he just didn’t get it, and pulled free of his grasp. “Goodbye, Zane.”
His mind spun, thoughts bouncing off the walls of his head as he tried to scrape ideas together in a last-minute rush. He needed more time. He needed a damn good reason for her to stay, but damn it, he couldn’t think! She turned around, agonizingly slow, and he could see the muscles in her back through the crispness of her suit.
“Charlie. One last night.” His voice was soft, a plea in the undercurrent that he cursed himself for exposing. She stopped and he moved forward until his chest was pressed against her back, one arm wrapping around her waist. He pulled her against him, her body cupping his perfectly, like it was made for him.
She stiffened, but he didn’t let her go. His arm snug around her, he rubbed his chin lightly across the back of her neck, letting the stubble scrape gently against her skin. He murmured in her ear, using the sexiest voice he could muster. His beautiful-girl voice. “Go for a run with me. Tonight. One run.”
He’d figure something out between then and now. He’d get her back.

Review:

Rock star and shifter Zane Alexander has everything he wants at his fingertips, except head of security Charlie Banks.  From the first day she joined the band she made it clear she wasn’t interested, but Zane knows she is his mate and although not a saint is waiting it out.  When Charlie unexpectedly gives her notice, Zane comes up with a plan to keep her with him until he can convince her she is right where she needs to be, with him, as his mate and lover.

Best laid plans very rarely work and Zane’s is a doozy, his warped idea starts with a pretend threat against him only to have the threat become very real.   If he comes clean, he loses Charlie but when the attacks become personal he knows he has to risk everything to keep her safe.  I thought this was highly entertaining, filled with the potential for more stories each character is intriguing and polar opposites of one another.   I liked that Charlie had maintained a professionalism throughout until she gave notice and the real Charlie comes out to play and throws everyone off kilter.

Love Under Two Cowboys by Cara Covington

Love Under Two Cowboys (Lusty, Texas, #12)Love Under Two Cowboys by Cara Covington
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Chase and Brian Benedict have been waiting for Carrie Rhodes to realize that she is the one for them. While they have been flirting regularly and making their intention clear, her shy demeanor has kept them at a distance, until she witnesses the wedding of one of Lusty's newest couples.

Carrie has secrets and before she can truly commit herself to Chase and Brian, those secrets have to be revealed, they don't want half a a woman, they want her body and soul.

I had a difficult time with this one, I don't know why because I generally am a big fan of Cara Covington's work. I think for me there as just so many people in it and then you had a couple sideline stories and it all got overly convoluted when I just wanted to focus on Chase, Brian, and Carrie. I think I will try to reread at a later date and see if it is better the second time around.

Millie's Second Chance by Dixie Lynn Dwyer

Millie's Second Chance (The Town of Pearl, #4)Millie's Second Chance by Dixie Lynn Dwyer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Millie Donovan left the town of Pearl years ago, but her fond memories never wavered sending her best friends Anna and Stacey to find true love and away from the negative lifestyles they were surrounded with. Millie should have taken her own advise, but she met a man who she thought she was in love with only to have him brutally abuse her and leave her within a thread of life. When she finds out he got early parole she is worried, when she receives a phone call from him she panics and heads to Pearl. The one thing Millie vows is never again let a man in her life.

The Lewis brothers are looking to find a relationship similar to the menage lifestyles the town accepts, but they have not found a woman they can all agree on. The biggest hurdle right now for them is Dalton, he has been hurt and that he wears battle scars has him questioning every women in their path. When he meets Millie he is attracted to her, but quickly decides she is the same as the rest of the women who fawn over the Lewis brothers. Hank, Jeremy, Anthony, and Marco see it differently and little by little Millie gets under all of their skins. Dalton is the first to act though and once her tender kiss hits his lips there is no going back, he plans to protect her no matter what. Millie is used to be independent and has had so many bad experiences she is not quite willing to hand over the reigns quite yet, wondering if it is possible to find true love. The Lewis brothers intend to prove there is.

I liked this one, but probably my least favorite. I was slightly confused because there is a back story that really was not referred to in Anna and Stacey's stories which is huge. I liked Millie, but was more interested in the male characters particularly Marco who is a deputy and really controls the tone of the story when he is in it. Dalton is a quick runner up though.

Savin' Me by Alannah Lynne

Savin' Me (Heat Wave, #1)Savin' Me by Alannah Lynne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kat Owens didn't know what made her agree to a one night stand, but when she met Erik Monteague fell into one full heartily. A year later she has moved to a new city, new job, and new start. The last thing she expected to see was her one night stand who would like a repeat performance or one or two...

Erik doesn't do relationships, the one he had ten years ago taught him a valuable lesson. Never put you heart out where it can get wounded, when he spent the one night with Kat he wanted something more from her. He is not sure what but he knows it can never lead down the path he knows she deserves, but when she is reluctant to have a fling it causes Erik to reflect and make an important decision.

I thought this was a wonderful read, the emotions were very real for both characters. Erik made a mistake in a heated moment when he was young and his guilt has ridden him since then. You sense he is afraid of what is developing between Kat and himself and it leaves him tormented on what to do. Kat though has always been trying to please her family and make them proud, when Erik is there for her in a time of need she finds herself falling deeply for him and is willing to take the time he needs to come to terms with his own feelings, but his ghosts cause him to panic and possibly lose everything he holds precious.

Paranormal Romance, What do you think about it?
By Hubert de La Bouillerie

Paranormal Romance is an interesting mix. Love and the power of the unusual, can create fantastic situations. Love being one of the most intense and primal emotions we have, confronted with the unspeakable forces of evil will bring the best out in us.

The fight to survive, to protect those we love in the face of insurmountable odds, against the armies of darkness is always gut wrenching and fascinating story telling.

If an author manages to capture your imagination with images of battles, from the mind to the physical, from the surreal to the metaphysical, while sewing a tale that keeps you up at night wanting for more, it can rival any other genre.

There is nothing more satisfying then when love has the power to conquer forces greater then ourselves, to fight the good fight regardless of the consequences and save our soul from damnation, we admire it.

Our imagination is limitless when love and romance fill the heart. When well executed, it is an explosive combination that powers the mind to dream the impossible.

I believe that Of Love And Evil The Birth accomplishes this; from a blood splattered cabin in Utah, to the heights of the Manhattan skyline, a woman’s discovery of her incredible past life to her coming of age in a world dominated by corporations intent on dominating the world for the few. Her voyage to make the world a better place through love, will challenge even the hardiest of us.

Ethan Savage has had a crush on his coworker Violet Moore for three years, but his Dom side of him can't settle for someone who is not submissive, and there is not an ounce of sub in Violet. Deciding it's time to sever the cord and distance himself, he plans to shut the door on his friendship with Violet until an unexpected discovery has him wondering if he knew Violet at all.

Very quick read, I wish it had been longer. I thought it was a bit rushed with Violet's introduction into Dom/sub play. Definitely had chemistry between the two though.

Wildest Dreams by Kristen Ashley

Wildest Dreams (Fantasyland, #1)Wildest Dreams by Kristen Ashley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Seoafin "Finnie" Wilde desperately wanted another chance to see her parents again, unfortunately their demise when she was fifteen has left an empty feeling in her heart, she never had the chance to say goodbye. Finding out that there is a parallel universe where each person has a twin, Finnie sees a chance to see her parents again and perhaps be able to let go finally. If you were given the chance to recapture something you once lost, would you do it for one year of your life, no matter the cost? Finnie did.

The plan was simple, one year to be with her parents. Her parallel twin would come over to our world, while Finnie would venture to a world filled with magic, castles, and adventure. As the plan formed, the communication between the two twins increased they wrote a letter to one another informing them of everything they would need to know to pass for one another without raising to many eyebrows. The day came and Finnie's adventure began......

Of course best laid plans always have a few rumples along the way, Finnie, now a princess, immersed into the new world only to find she was to be married in ten minutes. No time for explanations her husband to be was handsome, but in no means happy about the union, his cool demeanor was evident. Now Finnie finds herself married who doesn't want her, thrust into a cabin that is filthy and all alone until her husband decides he wants to see her again. It looks like there were a few things that were left out of the letter, but an adventure Finnie will have.

So I thought, this will be the book that doesn't captivate me so much that I drop everything and read. Yes, I was looking for a flaw! I mean really can Kristen Ashley continue her works of perfection, really and this one I figured would be the one that had me struggling with since it is not what I would normally read. I was so wrong, needless to say, the house is a pit, there is laundry to do, and I need to eat something. I don't know how she does it, but she does. I absolutely loved Frey Drakkar, I was stunned by his reaction to Finnie initially but it all made sense later. Frey is of the blood of the dragon and frey, he is unlike many of her other characters because he does some questionable things along the way that you know Finnie of our world would disapprove of. You have a woman of our world enter into a realm that reminded me of medieval times/enchanted realm and the mixture is humorous and fascinating.

With a difficult childhood, Connie Jamieson has had a hard time letting others in, even her husband before he passed away. Connie has kept her walls safely in place, taking care of her ranch and her son. The only male companionship she purposely seeks out that has any long term meaning is Beau Preston who is as close as she has ever allowed, and his twin brothers Josh and Colt whose flirtatious nature has her wondering if they are ever serious.

Beau has been waiting for Connie to let go of the guilt she feels about her husbands death. Biding his time he finally makes his move with his brothers encouragement and a wicked night has all four of them scumming to their needs. Connie only wants the one night, while the brothers want Connie long term. Connie is more tankerous than an untrained mustang but they are willing to wit her out and allow her to come to them, their plans hit a few bumps along the way and Connie's issues with trust could destroy what they are trying to build.

I was a bit disappointed in this one, Beau is sultry and delicious. Josh and Colt are randy and fun, but Connie is kind of abrupt and hard to read. Who knows I will probably reread and love it the second time around.

Keller Donovan has seen it all in his line of work, that is what makes him the best, but he can honestly say he has never quite had an interview like he had with his newly hired assistant Farrah Smith. The woman with her wardrobe malfunctions and false eyelashes askew has him wondering what is really hiding beneath the shell she has presented him with, if nothing else it looks like his days will be filled with a bit of humor.

Farrah dislikes Keller even before her interview, but her sister needs surgery and she needs the highest pay out there to make it happen. Despite her reluctance her sister talks her into wearing a blond wig, stilettos, and trying to replicate Keller’s obvious taste in assistants. Something about Keller doesn’t add up though, for everything she read in the papers don’t come close to the man she works with everyday.

Fire Of The Wolf by Lori King

Fire Of The WolfFire Of The Wolf by Lori King
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Caroline Trainor's only thought when she braced the fire in her apartment was to save her neighbor and her little boy. Caroline has no family and although not related, they are the closest thing she has, protecting them is her only thought even if it costs her her life. Waking up to find Devin and Damon Gray in her hospital room, she is confused initially, until they make it clear they are not leaving. Caroline feels like she stepped into the twilight zone, she doesn't know these men and words like mate are flying through the air.

Devin and Damon never planned on having a mate, but even through the flames he knew who she was. Now that they found her they have to try and tame their temperamental mate who seems determined at pushing them away.

This was a lot of fun, discovered it accidentally but well worth the read. The twins are a hoot because one is the more gentile while the other is a hothead who is used to being Alpha and his word is final. Can't wait for the next one, could definitely be a series that you can't get enough of.

Sometimes life can be a real witch.

Meet Maxie Duncan. Your average 23-year-old blonde. If you can call being wealthy, gorgeous, and knowing what the future holds at times, average.

After her fiancé blindsides her with a breakup at their favorite restaurant, she leaves Maine for a shot at being Hollywood’s new ‘it girl.’ There’s only one problem. She’s never acted a day in her life.

When a big Hollywood director sends her packing, she realizes if she wants to stay in L.A., she may have to become a normal girl after all. But normal has never been in the cards for her. Strange things keep happening wherever she goes, a red-eyed shadow no one else sees is stalking her, and to top it off, she may be falling in love again, with either the bookish guy next door, or Hollywood’s hottest leading man.

But everything isn’t what it seems. Someone’s keeping secrets from her. Is it her new friends at the apartment building she moved into? Or is it Ryan Everheart, the actor who wants to sweep her off her feet? And why are her feet suddenly floating off the ground?

It’s enough to drive a girl insane. All Maxie wants to do is ride off into the sunset with her one true love and find a killer pair of Manolo Blahniks on the way. But how’s a girl supposed to focus on a love life and shopping when everywhere she turns someone or something is trying to kill her?

About the Author :

Melissa L. Webb is a writer, dreamer, thinker, and a seeker.  She is an avid fan of anything paranormal. Review:

3.5 Stars

Maxie Duncan has been dumped by her fiancée, imagine the girl who has it all actually dumped and replaced.  Maxie  is thoroughly confused by her place in life now that marriage is off the books, she is rich, beautiful and has always dreamed of being a wife.  Deciding she should try her hand at acting, this Maine girl heads to Hollywood only to have her new whim shot down as quickly as it starts.  Befriending a friendly hotel manager Maxie finds herself meeting her Hollywood heartthrob and dating him, but she also is struggling with her feelings for neighbor Jensen who she feels a connection with too.    As if it was not enough she has a red-eyed shadow following her around, who would have thought life in Hollywood would be so strange?

Entertaining story, Maxie is a bit clueless and goes with how she is feeling even though her instincts are amping up to high voltage and she is ignoring them.  Her foils with trying to find a job are hilarious,  very light read and perfect for the Halloween season.
