Theme Day: Kidnapping

There are a ton of different styles of plot lines for a kidnapping, some dark while others are hilarious.  Here is a sampling of a few favorites.

Bound and Determined (Sexy Capers #1)DesireThe Devil Wears Plaid

Into The Shadow (Darkness Chosen, #3)Into The Shadow by Christina Dodd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Karen Sonnet has lived her life trying to please her father, but nothing she does has been good enough. In Nepal to begin development on his new hotel, Karen finds herself visited at night by a seductive stranger who makes her forget all her worries.

Adrik Wilder covets Karen, not hesitating to kidnap her and make her his own. Adrik long ago swept out the good in the world, but when he sees Karen something within him wants out When Karen's life is in danger, Adrik will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

This is the first book I read in the series, of course it is number 3 but it didn't matter. Excellent story, I was completely captivated and not sure where the story would lead. Loved Adrik's character, thought he was somewhat brutish but seductive none the less.

Breathe by Kristen Ashley

Breathe (Colorado Mountain, #4)Breathe by Kristen Ashley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Chace Keaton had his life planned out and the woman he hoped to marry in sight until his father got caught doing something that would destroy everything. Protecting his family, he married a woman he hated and went along with the corrupted cops biding his time, until he had enough. Now his wife is dead and his guilt is irredeemable, but in the eyes of Carnal, they see him as a hero even if he does not.

Shy librarian Faye Goodknight has had the same crush since she was sixteen, Chace Keaton, although he doesn't know she exists. When Faye bumps into Chace, it is not the fantasy of friendship she hoped would result, instead he is curt and makes his opinion of her very clear. With plans to steer clear of Chace for well, forever, Faye finds she needs help from the police with finding a homeless boy who looks to be abused. Although the road is rocky, Chace realizes he can no longer stay away from Faye, he feels unworthy of her and all that she is willing to give of herself. She is everything good in life, while Chace feels he is the dirt she should walk on.

I loved this one, out of all of her books I found Faye the most relatable. I loved that she was a Serenity fan and found great humor in her tangents. Chace is another strong alpha male, but Faye although in the beginning is shy and awkward, matches him in every way. Another fantastic read.

Devin Barnett always regretted that he never had a chance with the one woman he had a huge crush in in school. Geeky and scrawny he had never been on her radar, but he had hoped that he would in college, instead sh ended up falling for someone else before he had a chance. Ready to tear his hair at as a romance writers convention taking place in his hotel and the women are buzzing around like horny little bees looking like he is the nectar, he is ready too hide out until he sees Keary Galloway, his big crush. Pretending he is a staff member he manages to seduce Keary, but one weekend won't be nearly enough.

I actually had read this before but had not realized it. Quite fun, has a few holes in the story but overall an entertaining read.

Coming Undone by Lauren Dane

Coming Undone (Brown Siblings, #2)Coming Undone by Lauren Dane
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After raising his brother and sister when his parents died, Brody Brown never expected himself to truly get involved in a relationship that would require anything more than some shared intimacy. When he meets Elise Sorenson for the first time, he thinks he has had a glimpse of an angel. His new neighbor and her six year old daughter continue to draw his attention and now for the first time in his forty years he is wondering if they are what he has been missing all along.

I love this story, Brody is a charmer and Elise is shy and quite opposite of Brody but they work. The one thing I really enjoy about this story is it takes the time to unfold, like when you meet someone for the first time and that hesitant kiss with promise that it leads to something more, only to wait in anticipation to see if it actually does. Beautiful story.

***reread, this is such a great story. Brody is just yummy, he is badass but also a gentle giant.

July: Firefighters

Five Alarm Neighbor (To Serve and Protect, #1)Five Alarm Neighbor by Anna Leigh Keaton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Gracie Terrence has had a not so secret crush on her firefighter neighbor Steve Sheldon since they became neighbors. Steve caught Gracie's voyeuristic moment watching him with his then fiancee having sex, that moment has seared itself in Steve's mind. Now that he is single, he wants to explore the chemistry between, but he quickly discovers he wants more now to convince Gracie he is worth the chance.

I had mixed emotions about this one, loved the beginning but I wanted more between both characters. I felt like there was something major missing from Gracie's past. Otherwise entertaining fun.

Judging A Book By It's Cover (#11)

Judging A Book by It's Cover, is a weekly challenge that will be held every Wednesday, but you can complete at your own pace.

The gist of it I will go to my To Be Read on Goodreads and pick a book solely on it's cover. You can pick from books at home, shelfari, amazon, goodreads, etc.

At one point I read the synopsis so feel confident of the books in my TBR are ones I would enjoy, however for some reason I have not picked it up since adding it.

I will post the cover of the book with my initial thoughts on what I think it will be without rereading the synopsis. Once I have finished the book, I will write the review and compare review to cover. I think this is an interesting type of challenge and could be a lot of fun. Plus it gives me a chance to tackle books that either caught my eye or the cover has turned me off and I have not given a chance.

This week I am choosing:
Tempting the Beast (Breeds #1)

Initial Thoughts:  I will admit (hanging my head down in shame) I have had this on my kindle for a long time, but every time I go to read it I can't get past the cover.  I don't know why, I love Lora Leigh but the cover doesn't capture my attention.  So I am hoping this proves my whole judging a book by it's cover is not always is the best thing to do, which I tend to do a lot.

If you would like to participate here are the rules:

Post a comment and include your blog link, if you do not have a blog leave a comment with your selection:

Choose your book cover.
Post your initial thoughts on what the book will be.
Review and post your thoughts on how it compared to the cover.

Judging a Book By It's Cover Results (#10)

Hourglass (Hourglass, #1)

Initial Thoughts:  I frankly have no idea, but I know it is a young adult.  I love this cover, think it is fantastic.

Results:  The cover makes total sense once you figure out the story.  I don't want to take anything away from revealing too much because it is refreshingly different and deserves to be read without the whole plot reveal.

Hourglass (Hourglass, #1)Hourglass by Myra McEntire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Emerson Cole knows she is different, what average seventeen year old sees the dead from different times in history? As her sightings progressively get worse, her brother finds a new solution, a group called Hourglass that has experience with the unusual. Emerson is about to open herself into a new world of the unexplained and the center of some new attention from several different sources.

Without giving to much of this plot away, it was like a complicated puzzle that pieces begin to fit but there is still more that needs to pieced together as it goes along. I found myself pulled into this unique story and I was torn on how it all played out because I wanted so much for Emerson to find herself without any consequences. Beautifully written and eager to read the next book.

Amber's Muse by Lacey Wolfe

Amber's MuseAmber's Muse by Lacey Wolfe
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Although attracted to her neighbor, Amber believes he is a lazy bum. Jax has managed a way to insert himself into Amber's life, but she continues to rebuff him, until one day she comes up with a request, she wants to use him for research for her erotic novel. What starts off as fun turns to something more, but Amber's opinion of Jax leaves little to be desired and Jax has had enough.

Very short story, I liked this one but it needed more. The end is real quick and wrapped up where I would have liked it to have more substance and see Amber go through her ah hah moment.

Theme Day: Bartenders

There just is something sexy about bartenders that always makes or a good book.

Head Over Heels (Marine #1)Simply Irresistible (Chinooks Hockey Team, #1)Were Love Found Her (Were Trilogy, #2)

Hell, Yeah (Honky Tonk, #2)Hell, Yeah by Carolyn Brown
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Cathy O'Dell is as tough as they come, owner of the Honky Tonk and not afraid to put a man in his place including the hunky cowboy who walks right up to her and gives her a New Year's kiss.

Travis Henry doesn't know what possessed him, but the stunning beauty with no one to share the New Year's with has him captivated, until she starts yelling at him. No matter how hard he tries after he seems to be the target of her poisonious barbs, that is until they reach an impasse.

I think I waited to long to read this sequel, the beginning was hard to wrap my head around trying to remember the characters from the first book and figure out what was going on. Cathy is difficult to like and it takes over half the book to get her to soften up, but once she does than the book is more enjoyable. There is one really funny scene that had me cracking up for awhile.

Bedded By The Greek BillionaireBedded By The Greek Billionaire by Kate Walker
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Angelos Rousakis was denied the one thing he truly wanted, Jessica Marshall. Jessica was born to wealth and a privileged life while Angelos had to work for every nickle he had. Seven years later, he is back and Jessica still feels the sting of his rejection. The tables have turned for Angelos who now has everything Jessica holds dear to his heart in his hands, except for Jessica but he has a plan on how to obtain that as well.

I was disappointed in this one, Jessica who loses everything she has ends up hostile and shrilling her disdain for Angelos. Angelos is cold and out to seek his revenge on Jessica Whatever the case you don't get that they even like each other at the end and than they are in love, not sure what happened but I think there was something missing in the story.

A Reclusive Heart (Hollywood Hearts, #2)A Reclusive Heart by R.L. Mathewson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jamie can't believe she has gotten the nerve to actually sign with Rerum publishing in two different capacities, one as editor to the clients she already had and the other as the next best selling author. The biggest hurdle for Jamie now is that although she signed, it didn't require her to leave the comfort of her home. A recluse who has always felt inferior in her family, Jamie doesn't even have a close friend to turn to during this new transition of her life.

Enter Nick, Nick playboy and flirt is amused by the baggy closed, bottle glasses, frizzy haired new hire at Rerum. If anything Jamie will be a source of entertainment for him to watch, until he realizes she is the author he wants to take under his wing. A makeover, a tour, and a revealed list of all the things Jamie want to do but has been to afraid to try. Nick's little recluse is full of surprises and the playboy is finding himself completely falling in love with her.

I thought this was adorable. Nick is a bit curt with Jamie in the beginning, but as you get to know him you realize that he is not able to relate to Jamie initially, but as she comes out of her shell a bit they find they have more in common than they think. Can't wait for more in this series.

Love Under Three Titans by Cara Covington

Love Under Three TitansLove Under Three Titans by Cara Covington
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Margaret "Maggie" Morrison moved to Lusty, Texas to be closer to her niece and her son. Never once in her life did she plan on marrying and having children of her own. A rigid upbringing left her self sufficient but lonely as well. The minute she came to Lusty she caught the eye of triplets Richard, Trevor, and Kevin Benedict who seem interested in pursuing her.

Richard never thought that he would find a woman to share with his brothers, there had never been who sparked an interest so they had always been singular in their pursuits. Maggie calls to him like no woman before and his brisk and often uncomfortable ways of expressing him seem to mesh with the beauty. Trevor can sense all of Maggie's emotions and feels in tuned with her in every way. Kevin the voyeur of the bunch likes to bring out Maggie's naughty side. Now all the three have to do is convince her that she can have it all, but before they do that they offer her a fun and games attachment so they don't scare her off, this could backfire though as her feelings for all three grow with every moment thy are together.

I don't know what to think on this one, there was a lot of stuff left out that gets hinted at. I think the one thing though is the only one you really get to know is Richard, which I would have liked to read more about Trevor who gets kind of lost in the story. Maggie is a contradiction, I liked it but was disappointed too.

This week I am chose:

The Knight and Maggie's Baby

Initial Thoughts:  Looks to me like a runaway bride story.  The title is fun and I like the b/w photography. Looks contemporary but the Knight thing has me thrown off as I would this would normally be a word associated to historical titles.

Results: This was a story about a marriage bargain to help the hero keep something important to him.  He is a knight though which was an interesting twist. The Knight and Maggie's BabyThe Knight and Maggie's Baby by Lisa Mondello
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Jonah Wallace needs a wife, the woman who was supposed to help him out of his current pickle left him at the last moment. Needing a phone and a breath from the sultry sun, he heads into the cafe across the street, not knowing he is about to find a solution to his problem.

Maggie Bonelli expected to close early, but when Jonah walks in looking like he needs a stiff drink she treats him with a pie and cup of coffee instead. Forming a quick friendship, Jonah proposes to Maggie explaining he needs a wife for a year with no strings attached. Maggie pregnant just wants her child to have something she never had, a fathers name. Maggie agrees but finds it is harder to keep it strictly platonic with Jonah who seems to be struggling with it as well. Can they both admit their feelings before the end of the year is up?

Sweet story, I liked it my only complaint is the chemistry didn't develop as much as I would have liked. I think had it been longer it would have come full circle, but it was a fun story none the less.

From Rags by Suzanne Wright

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At fifteen Jaxxon Carter's life went from bad to worse. She had lost her mother years before when she committed suicide, her best friend and protector in her foster home left promising to come back, but never returned, and lastly her sister is walking out of her life leaving some biting words in her path. Alone Jaxxon learned the hard way how to protect herself and make a life for herself, even if it is living in squalor at least it's a life.

Years later Jaxxon is a waitress full of attitude when she is discovered and asked to model. Jaxxon never gave much thought about her curvaceous body or looks, she also knows that if an opportunity presents itself it is best to explore to see if anything may come of it. Now the it girl of modeling and one unlike any before, Jaxxon is the face of a new cosmetic company and highly sought after in every capacity. Jaxxon agreed to model but with that commitment she made it plain from day one she was not going to change who she is, she is blunt, hot tempered, and if she let's you in loyal to a fault.

Formula One Driver Connor McKenzie cannot believe after a break up from hell that he finds a magazine with Jaxxon on it. He regrets he had never fulfilled his promise of coming back to her, but he knew he wouldn't be able to walk away a second time and he made a vow long ago that he would never commit himself fully to another woman. Deciding to man up and seek Jaxxon out he is shocked by the her unwelcome reception when he sees her again, not to mention he decides in that moment he wants her. Jaxxon knows she can never have a relationship with Connor, but working each other out of their system seems like a perfect antidote for the two of them considering whenever they are in the same room they ignite like a wild fire in sexual tension.

Loved it. Can I just say I love this cover, love it. That alone had me eager to read this story. There is a lot to this story and it can be a bit raw at times but as you begin to understand the depth of each character you embrace what they have become. Jaxxon quickly has become one of my favorite characters she is one tough chick and had me smiling with the way she could get under Connor's skin. So glad to find a new author to read.

Operation: Spank MeOperation: Spank Me by Christina James
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lieutenant Finn Coleman has always lived his life by the strict code of the military, when he started talking to cyber pen pal Emma Shield he knew that he had to meet her one day. Finn is smarter than Emma gives him credit for, she is far to intelligent to be the campy persona she has created as her profile and after months of insistence asking for a picture he finally decides to make good on his promise, to spank her butt when he sees her.

Emma cannot believe how attached she has become to the mysterious Finn Coleman, she has revealed her inner desires that she had only read about in her erotic novels, knowing they would never meet what would be the harm in expressing them. That is all about to change when Finn shows up on her doorstep, but Emma is never one to back out of a direct challenge, she is about to up her game and has found a worthy opponent.

Wow, not a major descriptive word but this blew my socks off. I flushed, giggled, and just was completely in rapture by this book. Fantastic read.

Trying to Score by Toni Aleo

Trying to Score (Assassins #2)Trying to Score by Toni Aleo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Hockey player Lucas Brooks knew the instant he met Fallon Parker, she was the one. After two years filled with everything he had hoped for, his secret addiction tore them apart. Seven years later he has been traded to the Assassin's where Fallon is and he wants a second chance, because no one will ever measure up to his perfect match.

Fallon is running hard from Lucas every chance she gets, but her own secret is about to be revealed and it could shatter everything she has built once he finds out.

Lucas is admirable through out the story, he is charming and has worked through his own issues which has led him to be a better man because of it. Fallon though, I had a hard time struggling with midway through. She is her own worst enemy, she has perched herself on this pedestal and although recognizes her mistakes, she still places a ton of blame and mistrust at Lucas. I struggled with whether to give this a 3.5 or 4, but overall the story is a really good story and she finally gets it together in the end.

Monday Musings...you your own worst enemy

Read a book last night that had me thinking about heroes/heroines who are their "you your own worst enemy." You know the books where you want to reach in and grab them to shake some common sense their way.  Sometimes I find in these stories it is too hard to get past it and the hero/heroine drains me enough that I don't enjoy the story as much.   When you find the books where they wake up early though, wow it can be magical.

Any favorites you have or books you ended up hating because of this character flaw?

One of my favorites:

Nightfire
Nightfire by Lisa Marie Rice
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Former Marine Force Recon and SWAT officer, Mike Keillor feels his life is circling the drain. He finds himself in a horrid situation that causes him to have a wake up call and begin reflecting on where he wants his life to lead. That answer comes within hours of his ghastly mistake in the form of Chloe Mason.

Chloe Mason's whole life has been a lie, spending most of her childhood in hospitals she never had the true feeling of what a family is. Finding out she has a brother, has her both fearful and full of joy not sure if he will accept her. Everything she was hoping for comes true, but she also finds an unbelievable connection to Mike. When a hurdle gets thrown in their way, she finds Mike backing off and no explanation why until Chloe ends up on the radar of the Russian Mafia.

I loved this book, it was dark and heavy but oh so good. Mike is struggling with his demons, but the second he lays eyes on Chloe it all changes. She is a ray of light to his darkness and he wants to hold on for dear life, but her brother has hesitations about Mike as he has always been a player and were talking a sister he thought was dead.

The Gamble by Kristin Ashley

The Gamble (Colorado Mountain, #1)The Gamble by Kristen Ashley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nina Sheridan doesn't know what made her decide to fly across the continent and do a self proclaimed reality check on herself in the little town of Gnaw Bone, Colorado but everything about it so far feels right. That is up to the moment she found the stunning A-Frame cabin and her sinuses kicked in, she might have caught a bug along the way too, but the kicker is the man who is inhabiting her rental and refuses to leave.

Holden Maxwell knew the second he kicked out the feisty Brit who claims she is American that he made a mistake, he wants her back and fortunately for him she never left her car and he can give her the TLC she needs. What he didn't expect was for her to sleep like the dead, snap at him, finally wake up to a zombie like coma and when she finally comes around she has no problem trying to put him in his place. At every turn she surprises him and he knows they are about to have something special, but first she needs to dump her fiancee', control her temper while others are present, and if at all possible get enough time alone to explore her voluptuous body.

It took me awhile to gather enough interest to read this one. I love Kristin Ashley's books, but the synopsis had me ho humming a bit, what a mistake I made. I laughed, cried, pulled an allnighter what a fantastic read. I thought this one was a bit different too as Nina is quite unlike her other characters, she is probably the firecracker of the bunch and it is done in a her knack with words. Loved it.

Judging A Book By It's Cover Results (#8)

This week I am choosing:

Lycan It (Lycan # 3)

Initial Thoughts:  Love the title, how fun is that.  The cover is eye catching and really like the sepia look.   Would assume it is a paranormal shiter story.

Results:  This was a bit darker than I thought, definitely shifter but more about rogue packs and mistreatment of mates.

Lycan It (Lycan # 3)Lycan It by S.K. Yule
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Janine Denton was looking forward to her three week vacation, until she was kidnapped and thrust into a clan of wild men. Raze Jackson is fed up with his pack and their brutal treatment towards women. Women who are destined to be mated carry two scents, one scent as a potential and the other scent only their true mate can smell. When Janine is used as punishment to Raze for trying to escape, Raze realizes she is his mate. The last thing he wants to do is the one thing his alpha is demanding, take her against her will.

Interesting story, it was a bit short and would have liked to have it more substantial. Raze is protecting Janine but they don't really have a chance to get to know one another before Janine is force to make a decision about becoming a mate. I did read these out of order so it could be that I should have read it before hand to fill in the gaps.
